@Honeybee: SD shot down the hunger games idea! Boo! :( she said "too scary"
We might have to go browse the bookstore together and look for some of the other suggestions

Oh what about the Lemony Snickett books, too? The first one was made into a movie.

Also consider the Artemis Fowl series, they are funny and well written and I think they are going to be made into a movie soon. But I second Harry Potter and Hunger Games. I think at 7 they are too much for them to handle on their own but as a family it should be fine. Anne of Green Gables might be fun with just your sd if that is something you might enjoy. Pippi Longstocking is also a lot of fun, they are easy enough that you could all take turns reading them too but still full of adventure.

Hunger Games is a good idea, the author also has a series for younger kids that I haven't read but have good reviews. Might be less scary! I think they are called Gregor the Overlander or something like that :)

@Honeybee: thanks for the suggestions! My sister and I were obsessed with little house on the prairie! :)
DH voted for hunger games "because its shorter" , can you guess which one of us is the reader in the family? :)
I already own hunger games so I think we will give that a shot!

@cmomma17: hmmmm, my first thought for SD would be the Little House on the Prairie books or the Little Women books, but idk if that would be action-y enough for your SS? What about the Boxcar Children? Maybe a little below the 11 year old's reading level, but if she's struggling already, they might be just right for her?

@Honeybee: I have the hunger games books and I was wondering if they might be too scary since there is so much death? I like that with both of your suggestions, we could watch the movies together as a reward for finishing the book.
SS would love both and nothing scares him ever but SD is easily scared and lots of movies are upsetting to her (she thinks wall e was scary!)

Harry potter? Maybe the Percy Jackson books, too? Or the Hunger Games books. I think any YA novels that have been made into movies will be in the right genre to appeal to the age range you described.

My eleven year old stepdaughter and seven year old stepson are set to arrive Tuesday evening (we live in different states) for a month-long visit.
SD is into her BFF's, clothes, probably starting to crush on cute boys, entering middle school this fall. She struggles with reading. SS is a little wild man, loves dirt, bugs, sports, doing crazy things.
Any suggestions for a book we could read together as a family?
