This is great! I have a big chance of going scheduled c-section this time around, and I have no idea what to expect. It would be wonderful if I could hold this baby right away...I've never held any babies after birth, and this will most likely be my last.

This sounds great! I hated waiting to hold my LO after the birth!

@MamaBehr: I would ask your OB or midwife? I heard about it on the Facebook group for my midwife practice and my midwife confirmed it.

@MamaBehr: It's relatively close to the experience I had. My daughter was born via c-section, and my husband was in the room with me. He didn't get to cut the cord, and there was a bit of fluid in her lungs but as soon as it was cleared she was given to him and we got to hold her for the remainder of my surgery.

He was taken to the post-op room just as they were finishing my stitches, so a nurse held my baby. After I was transferred from the operating table to a gurney, I was given Chloe back to hold and she was never taken away from me again. I held her all through post-op, and even held her as I was wheeled to my recovery room, where she roomed in with us.

My husband didn't cut the cord, though, and my OB didn't offer to allow us to watch the surgery or drop the cloth (we wouldn't have wanted her to, either).

Good luck!!

Yes! One of my girlfriends opted for this instead of trying for a vbac. She felt so empowered and strong, and she just loved her birth. I was SO happy for her.

I love this and am saving this article for my next child. I would love for it to feel more like a birth than a surgery (even though techincally it is) I missed having that intimate moment with my daughter. However, even if this were an option she was wisked to the NICU so I was barely able to give her a kiss goodbye. (I did throw enough of a fit that they wheeled my bed down to the NICU so I could hold her for a few minutes before they took me to my room.)

@petunia354 DS had to be whisked away right after he was born too, so it wouldn't have been an option. But it could have worked with DD, and I really want this. I have never held a baby right after it was born and it always really bothered me that DH got to hold them before me (both of them!)

@daniellemybelle how do you know there is a nurse like this at your hospital? Is there a way I can look that up? I would love for this to be a possibility for me!!

There is a nurse at my hospital whose whole job is to implement family centered C-sections. She works regular business hours though (8am-5pm, M-F, I believe) so if you deliver at night or on the weekends, you unfortunately may not get quite the same level of care. It's nice to know that there is someone dedicated to it, though!

Everything this article mentions is standard c-section practice at the hospital I delivered at.

We had the option to watch the procedure (neither of us wanted to do so), and they prefer immediate skin-to-skin. LO had fluid in her lungs when she was born so they did have to take her for a few minutes to clear that, but I got her for skin-to-skin in less than 5 minutes after her birth, and held her the entire time I was being stitched up.

I think a lot of hospitals are moving in this direction; they just don't advertise it.

This is amazing! I truly hope it is something you get to experience!

I had a C-section under different circumstances which didn't allow for DH to be in the room and DS had to be wisked away to the NICU, I didn't even see him until maybe 10 hours after he was born. The most awful hours of my life! I would have done anything to have had that bonding time with him immediately after delivery.

I think this is such a great thing for moms who need csections though, it is a great compromise between a vaginal delivery and a more traditional c section. h

O this sounds amazing!!! Definitely try to push for this, if we decide to have another baby it will most likely be by c-section again and I would love this! Best of luck, I hope your OB considers it!

Have you ever heard of this? A friend told me about it, and it sounds awesome! I'm going to an OB/GYN appointment tomorrow and I'm going to ask her about it, but I'm expecting a big fat "NO." Does anyone have any experience with this?

Here's an article explaining what it is: http://www.chron.com/news/health/article/Special-delivery-indeed-Mom-baby-get-faster-4614409.php
