This exact thing happened to my good friend. She really did not want to use it and toiled with how to tell her in-laws that it wasn't going to happen. Finally, she just told them that safety standards have changed and that she didn't feel comfortable using it.

We have a family wooden bassinet. It is beautiful, but heavy and just not practical. We took it out if he attic and kept it in the living room for a couple of months, took pics, exit. Now it's back in the attic.

We have a family bassinet...its not the cutest but it means a lot to my mom and it is safe so we use it.

MIL also asked us to use the christening gown for DD1 - which I agreed (assuming she fit in it) and will do the same for DD2.

I guess for me - its not worth the battle. They do a lot for us and if it makes them happy then so be it!

My grandpa made a cradle for each of his 5 daughters when they had their babies. My mom had a plaque made for it that listed all of my brothers and my name and birth dates on it. I couldn't wait for my LO's to sleep in it some day. And my first DS probably took one or two naps in it since it was a bit impractical. But I still love that we were able to use it.

All this to say that I loved having the tradition even if it was short lived.

LOL - I didn't read the other posts but could have written this except the family crib is in my family (everyone has used it since my great aunt) and my SIL just refused it for baby #2. We used it for a few weeks ceremoniously. Now we're done having babies and it is in my garage. GTFO, crib.

My parents are going to email my 35 year old cousin and ask her if and when she's going to have kids because she should take the crib now. It's her turn. OMG - I am horrified for what is about to go down.

I wouldn't use it. I would get DH on my side by pointing out any safety hazards the crib has. I would just let them know that I picked out a crib and that is what the baby will use.

It's not quite the same because the crib has been passed down through generations, but I declined some baby clothes MIL bought because I didn't like them. I was honest with her and told her she could put them on the baby when the baby is at her house or she has the baby for the day.

I'm in a different situation because we have pretty much NO space, and family isn't local, so nothing comes into the house just for a few weeks then is easily removed. But in your situation (and SIL's, if hers is more like yours than mine) I would use it as long as it seemed safe. I have zero problem with second hand stuff but am pretty paranoid about safety.

The plaque is a really nice idea as a thank you!

@Cherrybee: I totally feel you. We have an antique rocking chair my husband's sweet grandparents gave us. It is SO ugly and I'm not sure if people were tiny back in the day or if it's made for 10 year olds, but it is comically small.

All that said, that darn thing is in the corner of my bedroom and will probably be there until they pass away, because they are so happy we have it. We usually stack laundry on it!

We were given a similar item (white painted wicker bassinet), complete with some crazy fluffy bedding that MIL made specifically for it (definitely not within current SIDs guidelines). DH couldn't refuse MIL when she gave it to us so it ended up at our house but we never used it. Eventually we told MIL that our LO preferred the Rock and Play and the swing and that we weren't using the bassinet, so we returned it to her. It was a white lie but it got us out of it. In our case, our LO was the first baby in several generations not to use the bassinet.

@Cherrybee: They are small plaques about 1.5 inches x 3 inches, in gold if I remember correctly and each baby has their own plaque. I believe the plaques are adhesive on the back and so they stick to the wood. You could also do one larger plaque that had the previous babies and then was added to with each new one. The engraving place could put a small hole in each corner and it could be screwed into the crib.

I think it would be a very sweet gesture on your part

@Autumnmama79: The plaque is a lovely idea. Is it attached to the crib? If so, how? Id like to get one made as a thank you for allowing us to use it. There's a list somewhere of all the babies who have slept in it.

@Greentea: I know! Its not second hand, its an antique - an heirloom!!

Her "I want nothing second hand" stance has worked out really well for us. DH's cousins' children are all older than E and are often getting rid of toys. E has enjoyed so much stuff from them - a play kitchen, lots of Little People toys, a load of Peppa Pig toys..... all plastic and easily washable. So I'm going to forgive her! :silly:

@Cherrybee: As much as it might be a pain, it is kind of a cool tradition/ legacy. As long as it isn't unsafe, I would use it a little while to keep the peace.

I find it a little annoying that SIL refused and "doesn't want anything second hand" for her baby. It isn't second hand, it is like... what, 4th or 5th generation hand?! 12th hand?

@Smurfette: @Truth Bombs: @blackbird: @MOMTOLITTLEB: Oh yes, I have no intention of refusing to use it because they really are very, very good to us. But even before LO1, when I had no idea how involved and supportive they were going to be, I still used it because it was so important to them.

Its really my SIL's reaction which surprised me and I wondered what people here might do. I think she had every right to say no but I was still surprised. I wish I was more assertive in life, generally!

My MIL went to the trouble of refinishing a beautiful antique cradle. DS1 hated it. DS2 didn't mind it but DS1 could easily tip him out of the cradle / swing the thing like crazy....so he didn't use it either. I still feel bad about it.

I like sentimental but I said no to cribs both because of size and safety. The one I was going to be handed down was a bit beat up and a drop side. I didn't feel like figuring out the logistics of size, luckily no one gave me a hard time. I did use MIL crib for show when we visited, though it made me very nervous because the drop side was tricky. So I'd let her sleep for a couple min then check on her and strap her in her bouncy chair.

We also have a family cradle that I'm on the fence about using for this babe, its just too big for our bedroom now! The crib has an engraved plaque for the name and dates of of each baby who used it so I'll feel really bad if this child isn't on there. Now that I think about it, maybe we should just use it, if only for a couple weeks.
