Vermont has two family friendly places. One is all inclusive (Tyler place) and the other is a little bigger (smugglers notch).

DH and I just got back from a 5 day/4 night trip to Captiva Island, FL! It was a really family-oriented resort and we saw a lot of families/extended families there :) (South Seas Inn Resort).

We booked our trip only a week in advance and the entire trip including nonstop airfare from MI was only $1300 for both of us.

@sweetchic: hhmmmhh if Mexico is out I think that will be tough. There are great all inclusives in the carribean but from Chicago you would likely have to connect in Miami or San Juan and that would be a lot to do with little ones.

I like the previous idea to rent a beach house somewhere. That's a great option when traveling as a family. Hilton Head, SC and the Outer Banks are good options. http://www.vrbo.com is a great site for finding retals.

Catalina is cute (if you're close to ca). Las Vegas has an aquarium, circus circus and other family friendly attractions.
I would do disney if I were you. Kids probably won't remember it, but they'll have lots of fun and you can capture great photos. A friend took her 1 and 3 year old and they loved it.

@MamaMoose: Hrmm, are there All Inclusives that are reachable within a 4-5 hour flight and doesn't require switching flights? (we're coming from Chicago)

@highwire: We're considering San Diego!

@sweetchic: What about California or Florida? You can get a beach house and do some beach stuff, but take the kiddos to do some fun activities. And the grandparents can take the little ones since they don't want to relax on the beach the whole time.

What's more important to you.. All-inclusive or staying on the US? There really aren't all inclusives in the US.

We're looking for a family-friendly and affordable vacation spot to go to in late July/August with my husband's family... any suggestions? This would be for us, his sister & her husband, their 2 kids (ages 1 and 3), and his parents.

Probably about 4 - 5 days. I was really pushing for a cruise (food & lodging all taken care of, so easy!!), but my SIL is really paranoid about cruising and food-related illnesses on cruises. ARGHH. Another thought I had was an all-inclusive resort, but SIL also wants to avoid Mexico... has anyone been to any good ones elsewhere? Although his parents are not the type to just hang out on the beach and sunbathe...

I was thinking somewhere in the US, no more than 4 - 5 hour flight since the kids are so young. (They actually went to Hawaii last year, dunno how they managed the 8 hour flight!). Too bad the kids are too young to appreciate Disneyworld/Land.

We're stumped...
