It is also ridiculously cheap if you can wait until after Labor Day. We just went to Avon, NC (on Hatteras Island) and loved it! Quiet, but close to restaurants and bars. Myrtle Beach is great. Like @bpcmarj: said, Ocean Isle Beach is quieter and family friendly, but its also really close to Myrtle. They are gorgeous, the water is usually calm. The color of the water is just so beautiful there. And it's super family friendly. BUT, I went to on vacation to Ocean Isle Beach, NC in 2007 and it was AWESOME. It was only about 20 minutes from Myrtle Beach when we needed a little more action, but it was so secluded and relaxing and was mostly families. Very quiet.
