@periwinklebee: the niro actually gets better gas mileage then the Prius and is cheaper (when you’re talking new) there were some other reason we chose the niro but those are what I remember off the top of my head

We have a Prius V and we love it - as much room as a small crossover SUV, 40mpg or more in stop and go traffic, and if you get a late model Five with a tech package you can get adaptive cruise. It’s not great for 3 across but if your oldest will be in a booster if you have a third, you should be able to make it work.

Thank you all, going to bring all these suggestions to dh!

@LCTBQE: Nailed it, hah....and who really wants to think too much about a third during the newborn exhaustion phase....so my guess is we won’t go with something huge...

I have a Subaru Legacy, and it fits 3 across in the back with slimmer car seats. It is a squeeze for the kids though lol. My husband has a Honda Pilot that HE LOVES (more than me, I swear), and I have to admit it's been a wonderful family car. It's built like a minivan, but it doesn't have the 'soccer-parent' vibe. It has plenty of room and the gas mileage is decent for that car size.

We can attest to how safe it is too! He actually got t-boned a couple weeks ago, and the entire passenger side was completely crushed in, airbags deployed and windows shattered... but not a single scratch on the passenger and the car still drove smoothly afterwards! Our insurance company of course declared it a total loss, and my husband is now getting THE SAME EXACT CAR omg he loves it so much haha.

@periwinklebee: I can't speak to the three-across issue, but we really like our Subaru Forester, it has plenty of room but isn't too bulky for city living--when I drive into Manhattan I never have trouble parallel parking it, and the back has enough room for our stuff and our dog. I think if you guys ultimately ended up having a third baby, long-term as five people you would be truly uncomfortable unless you got a big-ass car (like a Pilot or a minivan). So to me it boils down to, are you more averse to having a big-ass car that you don't really need, or more averse to potentially having to regroup your vehicle situation in a few years *if* you end up with a third kid?

If we don't already have a minivan, I would've probably wanted a Honda Pilot. DH has been eyeing the new Hyundai Palisade!

Toyota Prius! Good mileage, lots of trunk space, and fits two car seats and a booster in the back. The only thing is, you may want to get car seats that are on the narrow side, if possible. When we were putting ours in, they just barely fit. Also, we don't have room for adults other than me and DH any more - if you often drive friends or family, you need a bigger car.

We’ve been eyeing the Pacifica Hybrid, which is a minivan that gets 82 mpg.

We had a Toyota Corolla for years. We could do 3 across (only had 2 but had foster kids and carpool buddies) with certain car seats. We bought a Yakima roof rack for trips (camping gear, ski gear, etc.) It was great!

We upgraded to a Honda Odyssey this fall and love it. We are having a third and this way we don’t have to sacrifice on carpools and have space for my parents when they visit.

I would love recommendations on a car that can work well for hauling kids and their stuff (i.e. has decent trunk space), but also would work well for a long-ish stop-go commute in heavy traffic. We will only have a single car, as there are also public transit options nearby - but they don't always work well. We have two kids, but haven't made a final decision on whether we want to try for a third, so I'd like something that could fit three across in case we ultimately need it. I can definitely see the advantages of a minivan for hauling kids, but seems less ideal from a gas mileage, etc perspective for a daily commuter.

Thank you!
