Definitely look at Airbnb! There are tons of stand-alone cottages in New England that are really cute, affordable and have outdoor space. We’re staying near Burlington, VT but in Southern VT, I love the area near Manchester. The mountaintop inn near Okemo also has houses for rent, I think!

@JJ2626: That sounds amazing! I've only ever done airbnbs that are a room in someone's house - and more geared toward business travelers. I'd love to rent a house with great views from the porch. We live in the city, and my husband will attest that i never stop talking about how much I want a porch :silly:

I'd suggest an airbnb. We haven't tried a hotel but did a weekend at an airbnb near us in Northern California when LO was 3 months old and it was great. She is now 5 months, and we are going to Vermont next week and renting a small house in the country with great views from the porch. We figure that way, even if we are stuck at home because of naps, we'll be in a beautiful place and feel like we were really "away."

Thank you all, these are great suggestions!

@SteelerGirl: that's awesome to hear!

@ElbieKay: That sounds amazing, and thank you for advice on the timing!

@Silva: Thank you! That sounds awesome, I would love, love, love an unplugged vacation. I need to convince my husband to take a long weekend there...

@pachamama: I've been to Newburyport but had never heard of Plum Island, checking it out, as it is super close to us...

@bhbee: Thank you, I've been wanting to check out Manchester for awhile! It sounds wonderful...

@jennlin821: Thank you - it must have been such a gorgeous wedding!!!

@snarkybiochemist: Thank you for the tips!

@RonjaL7: Thank you!

@SweetiePie: Good point on the suite - the last thing I want is to spend the evening sitting in the dark petrified of waking up the baby.

@lamariniere: Thank you!

@Becky: Thank you, I'm definitely willing to wait until post-labor day if it makes it substantially easier/more affordable.

we stayed at the Samoset last summer with our two kids. it had a pool, great views and hiking near by. We had a suite, which was great with the kids and we had a balcony with a hot tub. It's a very family friendly resort- has a playground on site and zero entry pool. It's not southern maine, so it may be too far of a drive for you.

We took our 8 month old to a resort in Florida on a family vacation. Before we went I thought it would be a disaster- who brings a baby to a resort? What is she going to do all day, work on her tan? But it ended up being a blast. She loved splashing in the pool and floating in the lazy river, and she was at the perfect age for trying new foods so we could take her to any restaurant. All she needed were a few small toys to keep her entertained under a cabana while we took turns dipping in the pool.

Mt Washington Hotel in NH! Go during the shoulder season (immediately after Labor Day) and it will be nice and quiet. Outdoor and indoor pools, nice spa, fantastic veranda with mountain views and a good cocktail menu, fire pits after dark, golf, tennis, area hiking, and a Victorian era tourist train with a 30-degree grade that takes you to the top of Mt. Washington (tallest peak in the Presidential Range).

If you are cool with a more rustic, cabin feel, you could look at Loch Lyme Lodge in New Hampshire or (my favorite) the Highland Lodge in northern Vermont.
https://www.highlandlodge.com/

Its a little further drive but I worked there in high school/summers home from college and its a really magical place. Some families have been coming every summer for generations. Its recently changed ownership. They have a private beach on Caspian Lake which is pristine, boats you can use, a tennis court, and there are lots of wonderful local attractions (especially if you are interested in the farm-to-table movement, or craft beer). You can rent a cottage that has a kitchenette, and you'd be able to relax outside or in the living area after the baby goes to sleep. Its very quiet and peaceful. If you check their facebook page the have music in the bar a couple nights a week (its not a rowdy bar, don't worry!), and serve dinner most nights as well.
I still live in Vermont, but I've always felt that it was the most ideal place for a vacation. Kids have a great time there playing in the lake, going into Greensboro for ice cream, etc. Its pretty idyllic. I think the new owners are making some updates while maintaining the old charm but its definitely rustic in its furnishings (but very clean when I worked there)- just keep that in mind if you are interested.
Cell service could be somewhat limited, I"m not sure what their wifi situation is these days (they used to only have it in the main Inn). I don't think they have t.v.s in the rooms or cabins (they didn't used to). Going for an "unplugged" type of vacation.

@periwinklebee: we are literally just leaving the "North Shore" - Plum Island/ Newburyport. It was way better and way more bustling tham Google/ Yelp made it seem! Plum Island is a true gem- like Cape Cod but not as isolated/ spread out, better beaches and Newburyport was so lovely and fun. Easy to get to from upstate NY, much less traffic than the cape . We like relaxed days, quiet accomodations with stuff to do at night. Airbnb rules around here. It also wasn't cheesy touristy like a lot of Cape Cod is. I was so impressed with this cute area. Walking distance to beaches was a must (across the street). I've been to a lot of places in VT and I live it but this was fun for a beach visit.

Not sure if you have hotel points to use but we went to the equinox in Manchester vt (drove from boston) and absolutely loved the area. (Not that you need points - but we went free on SPG points years ago!)
I agree a suite/extended stay/vrbo can be more relaxing, so that General area might be worth looking. We kept it all pretty low key, lots of nature stuff and little towns, relaxed restaurants, some historical things if you’re into that. I believe we went around first week of August and it was so so beautiful and good weather.

We got married here, so it was pre-kids. But its truly a resort with lots to do on site and in the area. We can't wait to go back with DD!

We have traveled with E and stayed in both conventional hotels although we try for a balcony and more extended stay type places that have living rooms and kitchens and separate bed rooms. Obviously the extended stay type places work the absolute best. If you are looking to be somewhere that these aren't common then a Air BnB or VRBO might be a good bet. We try when traveling to go out to dinner and then buy a local beer/wine to have once we get back to the hotel and relax. This gives us something to look forward to when we know we will be ending up at the hotel by like 7:30/8 at the latest.
If you are driving to your destination I would bring your own pack n play for sleeping, hotels typically have a set amount of cribs/pack n plays and they are on a first come first serve basis so if its a family friendly destination you might not be able to get one. This also means its familiar to your little guy and might help with sleep. We also travel with our white noise machine which helps as both a sleep cue and also to block out some of the general hotel/city noises.

We never did Newport, RI with kids but we did it as a couple and loved it and I can totally see it being great with kids/baby. Can’t recommend a specific place though (we stayed for a Wedding at a place they chose and no balconies).

As far as WHAT to look for - personally we like a suite or two adjoining rooms. It’s an added expense but since our LO goes to bed early and doesn’t sleep well with distractions, we don’t want to also have to go to bed at like 7pm! So we will usually put him to bed in the bedroom and then we can hang out in the living area and balcony if there is one. Watch TV and have wine whatever. I sometimes go in and sleep with him and my husband sleeps on the pull out couch. Or we might both.
Also having a fridge for us was important. Many have already but some you have to request.

The very first trip we did when LO1 was about 4 months old was Martha’s Vineyard. Unfortunately, I don’t remember where we stayed, but it was quiet (off season) and cute. With an infant, I personally would look for a place that isn’t party central and that has rooms large enough to accommodate either the hotel crib or your own pack n play/sleeping pod.

Can you Air BNB or VRBO a place instead? I find that to be sooo much easier! Because the baby is so little I feel like any nice town you want to go to would be doable. Finding a place this late in the season might be hard, but weather is usually great into September so consider post-Labor Day options.

I'd love to have a weekend getaway, but realistically we won't be leaving LO (6 months) overnight anytime soon. So what I'd like is to find a place to stay with a balcony that has a nice view, where we can relax/enjoy the scenery/stargaze during LOs naps and after he goes to bed. Bonus if it is near hiking and has a pool. Anyone have any suggestions for somewhere nice in NH/MA/RI/or southern ME/VT? Or tips for what to look for in a hotel with an infant along?
