Both of my grand parents passed away early in their 60's on both sides. My parents are still alive, 51 & 58.

Although I have a great aunt that is 85, and in perfect health. Actually she still teaches a ballroom dancing class, she just taught one with a recital with 60 people!!

My paternal grandfather died of...sepsis, I think...following an operation when he was in his 60s, but all of my other grandparents are in their 80s. Two of them have Parkinsons, though, and the other one is just in bad health.

D's family must have discovered the fountain of youth somewhere, though. Two years ago D's 76 year old aunt nad her 87 year old aunt HIKED down into the bottom of the grand canyon. Earlier this summer the now 77 year old aunt walked 120 something miles of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. She seriously has an insane amount of energy. Both sets of his grandparents lived well into their 90s, as did their siblings. My FIL is in his mid-60s and is a mountain climber and both he and MIL go on double digit boke rides in the morning for fun.

And I'm just sitting here like "I want to be curled up with a book or sleeping".

My three grandparents lived into their nineties (92, 94, 96 - my dad never knew his father). DH's grandmothers both lived until they were 97 and 99. His grandparents died younger, but I don't know the specifics.

@travellingbee: That's a cool calculator. I got 93.39!

I never met my paternal grandparents as they passed well before I was born. My maternal grandfather passed away due to lung cancer when I was 4, and my maternal grandmother took her own life when I was 9.

DH's maternal grandmother is still with us. She's 86 and going strong! I don't know the history of his other grandparents.

@mrbee: All of my parents siblings are living. Both of my dads parents are living as well (Gramma is 86 and Grampa is 83).
My moms dad died 2 months before his 90th birthday and that was 3.5 years ago. My moms mom is still alive at 86.
So far, I'm liking my odds, people in my family seem to live quite a long time.

This is a cool longevity predictor based on many hereditary and lifestyle factors from UPenn.
It said average life expectancy for me would be 89 years. I'd be quite happy with that!

My parents and my husband's parents are in good health in their 60's and 70's. My Grandfathers all died young: My dad's died when Dad was 19, mom's died when I was 6. Dad's mom died when she was in her 70's but she had Alzheimer's. Mom's mom died at 92.

My husband's grandmother is still kicking at 102. She has no idea who anyone is anymore, though....

My mom's side the women live a long time: my great grandmother just passed away at 100 a couple years ago, my grandma is still with us going very strong acts way younger is in her 80s. The men don't seem to survive as long. On my dad's side both my grandparents just passed away this year in their 80s, grandma wasn't healthy for awhile, but my grandpa was a sudden heart attack and was considered very healthy.

My husband's side doesn't bode as well, he has no remaining grandparents, his dad's parents died young but his mom's were in their late 80s/early 90s. ON his dad's side no man has lived passed 70, his dad is 64 and really needs to start focusing on his health. He eats poorly and drinks in my opinion too much beer causing high cholesterol.

I had one grandmother die at 39 (kidney failure) and one grandfather die at 33 (hit by drink driver). My other grandparents both lived to 82 (stroke and Parkinson's). My mom died of ovarian cancer at age 58. My dad is 64 - I hope he kicks around for a little while longer!

I have a grandmother in Vietnam that is 95 or 96 years old. Which is amazing! I think it's great considering they lived in a country less developed than us. I met her for the first time a few years ago and it was so great to finally visit the country and meet her. I have no other living grandparents. My mother's parents unfortunately died fairly young in Vietnam. My father's dad died about 10 years ago, I think?

Oh, my parents are still alive at ages 68 & 58.

Been thinking about this lately, both because my insurance company asked me about it and also because I just visited my parents.

My dad's only sibling died of lung cancer at a relatively young age... but he smoked for a long time. He stopped, but there was probably just too much damage from his years of smoking.

My parents have had long lives and are still with us! My grandparents didn't make it quite as long, except for my mom's mom who is still physically with us... but mentally not here anymore.

What's your family history of longevity like?
