However, my maiden name dies out with my generation, which is why we are giving it to LO as her middle name. In DH's culture, there is no "carrying on the family name", because there is no family name. Kids/spouses generally take the dad/husband's FIRST name as their last name.</p> <p>So, let's say DH's dad's name was James Smith. Dh's name would be DH James. It was important to DH that we pass on his middle name, though (Evans). It's also FIL's middle name, and was FIL's mother's maiden name.
