@photojane: That is a good point - I have some pretty funny photos of my niece screaming her head off that my sister gave me :)

@tlcbaby: Just an FYI from a newborn photographer -- newborn photos are much harder to do than infant/baby photos! It's not incredibly difficult to get some good shots of your 6-month-old baby sitting in the grass outside in a cute outfit. It's pretty difficult to get a newborn calm, posed, and not red/blotchy!

I think I'm leaning toward newborn photos just to capture that short moment in LO's life. Maybe they can hide me in the few photos I'm in ;)

I would save it for a little later - I think you can still do some newborn photos just of the baby (probably what we'll do) and do a family session later when baby is more interactive. We may even try to do newborn photos ourselves.

I'm a huge, huge fan of newborn photos. There is something seriously magical about those first days with your sweet little one. Honestly, I almost guarantee that you won't look back on the pictures and think, "Gosh, I look so fat!" - you will look back and remember how amazing it felt finally getting to see and hold that little bub that you grew for so long! Most of the pictures will be of your tiny, precious newborn anyway!

I got professional newborn pics and getting 6-7 month pics as well. If I HAD to choose I'd go with newborn. Seeing us as a family for the first time through the lens of our photographer was quite special. Those sweet I'm head over heels in love with my tiny baby gazes are so precious.

I'm not a fan of most newborn photos. Weird, unnatural poses & props just aren't my thing... I'd wait, maybe even for a 1 year shoot!

I asked a similar question a while ago-- results came back pretty mixed but slightly more in favor of newborn. LO isn't here yet, but I had the same issues-- I'm not sure I'm going to love how I'm looking in the first 2 weeks or so, but they are only that little once.

I am leaning towards trying to take tons of pictures myself in the beginning and getting prof photos later when baby has a little more personality and looks more like him or herself, rather than just adorable baby? Still undecided though, at 32 weeks.

I'll see if I can find the old post bc it had some helpful comments!

Good gift! Use it for newborn photos and if you like the photographer's work hire her for family photos later.

I think for a family session I would wait until she is older. We are doing our family session at 7 months. Although I regret not doing newborn photos

Eta. Our photog suggested 7 months for family session because baby can sit up by then.

Another thread just made me remember this! My sister gifted me a family photo session for my baby shower. Would it be better to use it for newborn photos or wait till the baby's a little older and more interactive? Newborn photos are soooo cute but I don't love the way I look at the moment.
