Hahha so assuming this is my immediate family I would def take more than an 1/8th. And if my family knew that was my favorite they would give me the rest after everyone grabbed some anyway! :P

I'm a vegetarian so family style dining (also tapas) can be tricky. My strategy is that I say from the onset, dish xyz is all I can eat, so I'm ordering this just for me/I'm not sharing. I think unless you make that clear, people will side eye if you eat more than everyone else.

@ShootingStar: You make a good point. I'm glad I asks these random questions. It really shows me other points of views I didn't think about. :) Thanks!

I think it depends on a few things. I have a group at work where we go to this popular Chinese restaurant together and we order family style. Some people are vegetarians, so I'd expect them to eat more of the non-meat stuff we order. Last time we went there was one guy that didn't really like spicy stuff so a dish was ordered just for him. I expected him to take as much as he wanted, and other people could eat whatever was left.

I think if for whatever reason you're not big on all of the food and something in particular is ordered for you, you should take whatever you want of it. If it's just that you like it, then maybe a little more than everyone else?

@Mrs.KMM: Haha I spent way too much time figuring out what number is between 1/8th and 1/4th. 3/16th! :) I think. I use to be good at math... I swear!

I would definitely take more than my equal share. I don't know that I would go all the way up to 1/4 (because that seems like a lot when you are sharing). But I would definitely take more than 1/8 right off the bat.

Just to clear this up. Family style is when you order a bunch of dishes and all the dishes go in the middle and everyone shares.

I feel like a lot of Chinese restaurants are like this.

Here is the situation I am curious about.

- at a restaurant with close family (8 people)
- there are 10 dishes that were ordered
- you really like one of the dishes
- that dish was especially ordered because you

This might be a silly question. How much of that dish would you feel comfortable eating / taking for yourself?
