@My Only Sunshine: My LO tells me this sometimes too, and that she is going to marry me. She loves to tell me that when she is big and the parent, she will wear me in her wrap :silly:

She gets that one set of grandparents are my mom and dad and the other set is DH’s mom and dad (plus a step-mom who she understands isn’t DH’s mom but is still a grandma to LO). I’m not sure how well she understands “aunts” and “uncles” since we give that title to both siblings and good friends. Cousins are a whole different ballgame – which makes sense since LO has no cousins who live locally or that she sees on a regular basis, but when we go to CA and visit DH’s family, LO sees 25+ cousins just in her age range. So I imagine that “cousin” is a weird concept for her.

Kind of. She has no cousins so we haven't had to explain that yet. She seems to grasp that my brothers are her Uncles and there are other people unrelated to us that she calls "Uncle". She definitely understands that Grandma is my mom though.

Not really. I have been trying to explain to my 2.5 yr old because we just had a family reunion with my dad's brothers, their families, and my dad's cousins, but she didn't really get it.

My son understands the simple stuff, like who my brother is, my parents are his grandparents, etc. What I don't think he quite gets is the aunt/uncle/cousin relationships. He knows they are his aunt/uncle/cousin, but I don't think he fully grasps why, especially when he has a cousin that is close in age and another that is much older.

My almost 3 year old mostly gets it but every once in a while she says things like "When I grow up and you're the kid I'll be your mommy."

She gets a little mixed up sometimes, but mostly she gets it. Sisters are confusing for her I think because her sister isn't born yet, so she keeps asking if my sister is her sister.

She knows who my parents/sisters are compared to DHs parents/sisters. so when we say "we are going to papa K's house" she knows to ask if that set of cousins will be there.

He kind of gets it. He knows his aunties are our sisters. He knows that I'm his cousins auntie and they are my nieces.

The one thing he will not accept that his grandparents are our mom's & dad's.

She mostly gets it.
My family is easier to explain. Her cousins are older than I am so that's a bit confusing but she understand so-in-so is so-in-so's child.

She asks a lot of questions about it and is very interested in whose mummy is whose. She's trying to understand the 'step' and 'half' relationships, within the family and make sense of how her cousins who are siblings have different mums or dads, and how her step cousins have parents outside of the family.

A little. She understands how her grandparents are related to us and how her aunts are my sisters. She's big on "her family" which is just her, me and her dad. She doesn't include other relatives in her family. I have to explain that cause some people take offense when she tells them they aren't part if her family.

Does your child understand relationships? My daughter has been asking a lot of questions lately about who my mom is, who her brother is (she doesn't have one!), who her cousins are etc. she said her grandmother was her cousin. I keep reminding her who is who and how they relate to each other (in simple terms) but she's not quite getting it all yet :silly:

Does your LO understand the ins and outs of familial relationships?
