@highwire: Oh god. I despise the stand-up fan. My husband says he is bringing in a BOX fan and I said NO WAY. Ceiling fans are NOT disruptive, other fans are. I hate noise when I sleep and they're so freaking loud!! I feel for you. I do. The other night he wouldn't let me turn on the a/c, said it was going to get cool out, which would cool off our room. Turned two fans plus the ceiling fan on. I about flipped out on him.

DH requires a ceiling fan and a stand-up fan on HIGHEST of the HIGH setting blasting us all night long, to sleep. I fucking hate it, ya'll. This topic may keep that baby of ours sleeping in our bedroom indefinitely if it means I can finally sleep without living in a wind tunnel every single night.

Interesting! I was thinking about fans last night because we keep the house at 77 and it's really quite hot if we don't have the ceiling fan going. Maybe it's just too hot for a big fat pregnant woman but either way - I'm glad to hear that ceiling fans do not cause Caucasian Fan Death and do seem to help with SIDS. ;-)

We also heard that air circulating reduces the risk of SIDS, so we have one. We still have it in there for white noise even though she's a little older.

yes, we did. Our oedi suggested it to keep air circulating to help reduce SIDS risk. She has an overhead fan, but that made it too cool, so we went with one of the Dyson bladeless fans in there and made it oscillating

I've never heard that. Like others have posted, I've only heard that it reduces the risk of SIDS. I did have someone tell me that the "breeze" would cause colic. Little did they know, DS had colic and the fan's breeze was the least of my worries!

@Mrs. Yoyo: Me too! I bought an oscillating fan to help circulate the air. I've read that too stuffy air = higher incidence of SIDS.

I also hear it reduces the risk of sids...keeps them from over heating I think. We go ahead and run one in her room.

OMG my husband and I were joking about this the other day when we bought a fan for the nursery. I too heard that it reduces SIDS but of course growing up in a Korean household, fans at night were a big no-no. I can't wait to see what my MIL says when she visits and sees we use a fan in the nursery...

From the fan death wiki page: hahahahaha
Despite widespread reporting from the media and other agencies in South Korea about fan death, it has never been explained by these organizations why this phenomenon has never been reported or even heard of in any country other than South Korea.

Haha. Jk. We had a fan running in the room when LO was a newborn/infant. Used it as white noise.

Koreans have this thing about fan death. Koreans think that if a fan is on all night, it can cause death. So no, we never used a fan.

Is it true you aren't supposed to run a fan with a newborn in the room? I had never heard this until someone told me the other day. Due in August and crib is in our bedroom...too hot without air circulating, even with a/c on! Thoughts?
