I definitely would! We've driven 45 miles for a few birthday parties before at indoor gyms so I would definitely drive 30 mins for a cool butterfly party at a museum!

I totally would. 30 min isn't a big deal to me. I'll have to do a butterfly party for my DD some day. She would love that! Hope you have a great turnout!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think that sounds right. The first birthday party I had (for me...back in the Stone Age) where all of my guests were dropped off and their parents left was in first grade.

I'd totally buy my own ticket to the museum, and I swear, I don't hover! I just like to be nearby, you know? ;)

@runsyellowlites: I think it is becoming more common for parents to stay at parties. We had one parent ask if she could drop off her 3 year old for our daughter's party and we were a bit surprised. 5 is a tough in-between age for parents staying vs going.

@honeybear: To me a 5 yr old is school aged, some kids start Kindergarten by then. I would think you would have a mix of some parents who stay and others who leave. My 5th Bday was a blow out party; adults stayed, but I think that had a lot to do with people being curious about our new house/ neighborhood and the hike to get back to their side of town. My brother was born and raised in our neighborhood and parents just dropped off kids for all of his bday parties.

This day and age I will likely drive my kids everywhere and stay close by at a Starbucks at least.

@T-Mom: If parents stayed would you have to buy them tickets to the exhibit?

@honeybear: yes, the parents still attend at this age in our circle. My DD's class is also 3-6 yr olds so there are some young ones, too.
@runsyellowlites: yeah I will have to feed the parents for sure!

@runsyellowlites: I'm a little bit of a helicopter. :) But I don't expect to be fed or entertained at preschooler parties--they're for the kids!

Also, I'd want to go to the museum! I bet there is a lot to see after the party finished.

With the way my 2.5 year old behaves, we wouldn't go, but at 5 years old, I hope he's more predictable.

Once we RSVP, we attend, unless we're sick. I hate when people make plans and then flake out.

@honeybear: We've never had parents stay at G's parties & the only ones I've stayed at I was friends with the mom... I think the parents staying thing varies from social circle to social circle. I honestly would be peeved if I had to feed & entertain parents as well as the kiddos. Lol

A museum party sounds like a great reason to make the drive! If it were something like an amusement park/water park, I might not be so willing to get on the highway, but your plan sounds like a special experience.

I'm not so sure about carpooling. I don't know that I'd be comfortable letting someone I only knew through school drive my child on the highway. But I would definitely take him to the museum. I think 5yo parties are still largely attended by parents, right? They definitely were when I was five! (Eons ago...) :)

@pelikila: That is so true.. it's a drive to get anywhere worth going, it seems!

@runsyellowlites: Haha, yes seriously things were a little more lax a few years back when it came to kid transport, I'm sure!

DD is also invited to birthday party at the American Girl store (also at least 30 min drive for us) by a friend of mine who lives in another part of town. I think I'm more excited than her ;-)

@T-Mom: Yea, I think even I would be more apt to drive if we drove together. And I didn't think about that.. When G was that age the recommendation wasn't like it is now so most kids were easy to transport in any vehicle. He still uses a booster but that's much easier to switch than a convertible seat.

@T-Mom: I would venture to say most of us in Houston are used to driving for a bit to get anywhere (including me) so absolutely I'd take my kid to an HMNS party. The experience is worth the drive.

@runsyellowlites: So you are saying, like a carpool? I'm not sure whether these particular parents would go for that, but that is a really interesting idea. Most of these kids would still be in car seats or booster seats, so that could get tricky. But I never thought of that, thanks for the idea!

No, I wouldn't BUT I would use our car(s), & probably my moms car (since she lives here) to transport kids to & from the museum. If one of the parents wanted to come & they didn't mind transporting kiddos that could be a plus too (I've known moms that were all about that). A meet & pick up at our house & party at the museum.

My DD is turning 5 this summer. We didn't have a party where she invited friends last year, so this year I promised her a big party since 5 is a pretty big birthday, in our minds at least.

She requested a butterfly party, which takes place in the Museum of Natural Science. There is a butterfly exhibit and the museum does a nice job of setting up a butterfly themed party. We live in the burbs, though, so it takes at least 30 min by freeway to get there. All parties of her classmates have been at homes or local venues (we have done this before as well). I'm wondering if fellow parents from preschool would take the time and effort to drive their kids out to the party. I don't really want to fork out the $$ if no one is going to come.

Would you attend? And also what kinds of parties have you planned for your preschooler?
