They say one of the easiest ways to spot an American in Europe is by wearing flip-flops and a tracksuit, or flip-flops, jeans and a hoodie. For some reason, no one wears that here. I used to let it get to me, but I don't care anymore =P

I basically have no rules except for dressing for the occasion - so I try to avoid being too dressed up when others are in jeans and a t-shirt. People normally dress casually where I live so I'd basically packed all my accessories away! I used to make it a point to match DH's casual level, but I ended up dressing like a bum and that completely backfired!

My personal rules: I try to avoid calf length anything, it highlights my huge calves. I never wear short shirts, I prefer long shirts that cover my belly and elongate my torso. During winter, I found that layers work best and to avoid thick sweaters that look bulky under a jacket, I just get sweaty. All my shoes are for comfort - not by choice, but by necessity! I have a bunch of old shoes packed away that I will never use because everyone walks here and although they're comfy, they're not for trekking ;(

@mediagirl: there's always those few weeks when it is this crazy mish mash of clothing types. some people just can't part with their winter clothes just yet. i am the opposite (obviously). :-)

@Andrea: this weekend at the mall, I saw people in shorts and tanks and other people in winter coats! It's so funny to see what people wear when the weather changes. I don't think you would look funny wearing a skirt without tights, though.

I just thought of some more, but these are more based on my body type:

No tapered pants or leggings, they make my butt and hips look way wide. No capris, they make my already short legs look even shorter. Bermuda length shorts only if I do ever wear them, which is rare.

White jeans are seasonless, while white chino pants are for the summer only.

No halter tops, they make my shoulders look really wide

If I am wearing bare legs, I wear nude or light colored shoes, I hate the block of color at the feet as it cuts off the length of the legs

I have to be very careful with lip colors, my lips have a strong natural color and lipsticks change a lot when I wear them, so I usually just have on clear gloss.

For bags, I usually only wear either leather in winter and canvas in the summer. I don't match to the shoes, but since I usually wear brown or nude, they coordinate.

I'm in upstate NY and it was 70 today. I totally wore my favorite sandals (birkenstock gizeh) to work. I keep wondering how long until I can start wearing capris to work. I much prefer my summer wardrobe of capris, dressy tanks, and sandals to my winter clothes.

I don't really have rules. I am not very fashionable, but look for basic, classic pieces that I can mix and match. I avoid trends for the most part. I really dislike the leggings trend right now, as well as skinny jeans. Unless its late and an urgent trip to the store (basically for milk or medicine) I put on real clothes to go out.

I don't consider myself fashionable at all. I think I wear cute clothes or maybe they are just casual and not screaming for attention. Although, at work, I can wear a shirt, jeans and sneakers everyday. I used to dress up (skirt) but the weather is so different now that I live in Seattle. It's just easier to wear jeans. Plus, I work in lab where I have to wear closed toed shoes and long pants. :( Boring!! I have a drawer full of short skirts and capri pants that I used to sport during the summer. I get sad everytime I see them because I loved wearing them. Now I wear my 'summer clothes' about one month out of the year.

Anyway, I do wear white capris after labor day. I don't like wearing tight fitting pants like leggings or yoga pants. ( I don't own any leggings.) Only exception is when I go to the gym. I did wear a black peep toed shoes to my christmas party. (Is that considered open toed?) In my defense, I wear high heels about 2-3 a year!

I love flip flops and used to wear them as long as I could when I live on the east coast. Now, my feet get too cold to wear them for more than a month.

@looch: I am with you on just about every point! Europeans can make you feel slobby if you don't make some effort!

We have mild weather here. Similar to florida. I don't usually wear open toe shoes in the day in winter but will at night if I am going out.

My only rule -leggings. No one, bar DH, wants to see my arse walking down the street in front of them. Or even worse, my crotch walking towards them. Eek. So shirt covers arse when wearing leggings. The end.

I don't wear sweatpants, sneakers, or flip-flops out of the house. The only exception to this rule is if I'm going straight from my place to my parent's and I know they're not expecting guests.

I don't wear jeans to work unless it's Friday or I'm on site (as in, visiting a power plant, construction or something). There is no hard dress code at work and some of my co-workers do wear jeans on any given day, but I'm not comfortable being in anything less than business casual attire.

I will mix black and brown in some situations (I have a leopard print scarf I wear that has both colors so I will wear a black shirt with cognac boots) but I will not wear black shoes with a brown belt or vise versa.

Open toed shoes only if it is 70 degrees and only if my toes are painted nicely.

I will wear yoga pants out of the house (espeically now that I'm prego) but I always wear a fitted shirt and have my hair nice so I don't look like I just rolled out of bed.

I was so happy to get into my flip flops this week - its still a little cold, but I'm completely sick of my boots now and the belly is making it hard to put them on, particularly if I try to do it after eating!
No real fashion rules here, Irish people seem to be overwhelmingly casual thatway - just basics like not wearing white to a wedding.

I color block all the time, but I still don't like black with brown. Just personal preference, I guess. I only wear open toed shoes when the weather is warm (I'm in CA. I don't consider 70 warm), and I only wear boots when the weather is cold. If I'm wearing a belt, my shoes match the belt in some way. I don't wear sweats/yoga pants outside the house, and any "sweats" I own do not have elastic on the ankles. I don't know if those are really rules or just personal preferences of when I wear things/what I wear.

When I was in school, I always wore heels to an exam. That was a rule/tradition for me.

@artbee: I think it's funny how us Floridians pretty much have no fashion rules. I think we all stick with jeans+shirt+flip flops/sandals in general. And God knows during the summer months its just "wear as few pieces of clothing as possible."

I use to hate black with brown, but the other day I wore black tights with a brown tank and a tan with gold striped shirt... It looked better than I thought it would! not being matchy matchy is in now. I generally don't wear white due to my very pale skin. and I definitely wear sweats out of the house... hmm sounds like I don't follow any rules!

I have a lot of rules, but I live in Europe and people dress differently here.

I don't wear yoga pants and sneakers out of the house, I always carry a proper purse and I have my hair styled. I don't do anything super elaborate, but wearing shorts and flip flops outside of the garden just isn't done. I don't know why, to be honest.

I also "dress" when I go on an airplane, this is a vestige of my mother's fashion sense. I wouldn't get on a plane wearing a sweatsuit and uggs. Again, I don't do a dress with hose and heels, but I do wear nicer jeans, proper shoes and a nice top.

I don't really have any rules. I'm in Florida, so I wear flip flops all year round. Even if it's 20 degrees, if I'm not going to be outside for longer than 5 minutes to go to the car from a building, I'm in flip flops. I will wear black and brown, yellow and white gold, I like mixing things. And I'll wear white all year long too.

We've been blessed with a very mild winter here in MI. Today it's supposed to be near 70 degrees! WOOHOO!

My coworker walked in with her open-toed heels! :P I said she was crazy, (esp since she's sick with a cold!) but she says it's over 50 degrees and that's her rule!

When do you start wearing open-toed heels? White? Seasonal changes? Color palettes?

I don't wear black with brown, I wear white before Memorial day and after labor day, I only wear open heels during the summer months (june-aug)... I can't think of any m ore right now.
