There can be a gap but using one of those plastic bibs works great. My sisters 6 year old still uses his. Our table is waaay bigger than any high chair tray would be so I've decided its just her. LO1 uses it as a regular chair at the table and LO2 still uses it as a high chair. Love the look and clean-up is easy. </p> <p>I haven't taken the tray apart to see if there is any mold, but there is nothing to make me suspect there is. As far as food being pushed around, we always put things on a plate (as opposed to directly on the table or some sort of food mat) and I don't recall having a ton of issues with food getting all over the place or the floor other than when LO would willfully drop something. The fabric insert is totally separate, we never bought that either. We used the set-up like in the picture from 6 months to about 22 months. The tray keeps baby locked in place (the European model doesn't have straps). I bought mine open box on Amazon and once you figure out how to lock it and fold it, it is amazing. I will say it's super easy to clean, so that's good. It has several removable trays and you can buy different chair pads and it's all dishwasher safe (I just wipe them down, though).</p> <p>I'm currently looking at a Bloom Urban Nano or something, because it folds (just listed on the mommy group). </p>
