We honeymooned there and had a fantastic time. DH and I are usually more "live like the locals" travelers, but for our honeymoon we just wanted to chill out. Couples was perfect - the food was good, the drinks were abundant, facilities were comfy (not luxurious, but comfortable for sure) and the staff was fantastic. Definitely walk off resort down 5th ave one night! We have been back to Playa del Carmen 3 more times since then, but only non-AI (on the beach in town). If you can choose your room, go with one closer to the pier side, they're building a big Hyatt (I think?) to the north of the Royal.
