@brownepiano: Listing those out made me really excited to start reading chapter books to our kiddos (2 yo and still in utero, so it'll be a while).

@NorCalWayfarer: I think we must have shared a childhood! Now I don't have anything to add.

Except for maybe Cheaper by the Dozen and Bells on Their Toes.

Julie B Jones is a great beginning chapter book. Little kids seem to find her hysterical 😀

Magic Treehouse is definitely good for early chapter books, and the material is age-appropriate. Also, Magic School bus has a series of chapter books. They are all about science and very fun. Level is about 2nd grade reading.

The Magic Tree House series would be good for his age.

Kate DiCamillo has some great stories. I love The miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, but it might be a little sophisticated right now. Lots of kids like to start with her Mercy Watson books.

I second the suggestion for the Fudge books - those are great.

If your son likes humor, the Wayside School books by Louis Sachar are very silly and usually a big hit with my third graders.

@looch: @tinyperson: @lamariniere: Thank you for the suggestions! I will definitely look into these :)

I didn't grow up in the US so I am totally new to English books for kids. Not to mention honestly I don't think my mom read books to me at this age in my own language.... so this is very helpful :)

What about Judy Blume's Fudge series? I think it might be worth a pre-read though, in case you think he'd get ideas from the behaviour of the kids in the books.

There's also a character Geronimo Stilton, but I am not sure about the age range for those books.

DS is 4.5 years old and he loves reading. He can read simple chapter (level 2-3) books all by himself and I was thinking of the next step up. I was talking to another parent and he said he's been reading the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit series to his kids and they loved it, and it inspired me to read big kids chapter / middle grade books with DS.

While I think Lord of the Rings may be a bit too sophisticated for DS, we tried to find a "simpler" one at the library. We tried Aesop fables before but he said he was scared of the sometimes twisted storylines (eg. why would the father bring his two kids up to the mountain and not bring them back home??) . I remember a friend of mine recommended "The Mouse And The Motorcycle" to me, and how it is his favorite book when he was a kid. We couldn't find that particular book in our library, so we find another one by the same author, Beverly Cleary, and oh boy, that was a huge hit! DS LOVED me reading these books to him. We are now reading Henry Huggins.

Do you read real novels / middle grade / YA books to your child? Do you have specific titles / author that you would recommend for reading to a 4.5 year old boy? What was your favorite book when you were a young child? There are only so many Beverly Cleary books we can borrow and I'd love to have other names in hand! :)
