We had (and still have at 3) the same wide leg problem with boy pants. With the popularity of tribal-like patterns SOMETIMES you can still find some patterns in the girls section, but most of the time the boyish patterns in the girls section seem to be done in metallic or glitter. Not just the plain colored ones - which, like you said, I could find in the girls' sections of any stores. My little guy is so tiny that pants are so wide on him. Even the "banded" pants from gap and the three-pack "leggings" from carters are still baggy. Sometimes there are gender neutral patterns with little to no frills.
