We did a cross country road trip over Christmas when DD was 12.5 months. I brought a couple of these since she was in the throwing phase: http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Buddy-Secure-A-Toy-Orange-Gold/dp/B003Y3BGYE/ref=sr_1_3?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1392824942&sr=1-3 She figured out how to pull her toys back into her seat when she got desperate  She still enjoyed her Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes a lot. I also brought some finger puppets from the dollar spot at Target, a Plan Toys fish castanet and a maraca, a couple of small board books, some nuts and bolts from a Melissa and Doug tool kit, and her favorite stuffed puppy. She seemed a little too small for the nuts/bolts.

@shopaholic: my LO is in a throwing phase too! I need to look into a toy bar, because she often loses toys after I hand them to her after just a minute. It would be great if she takes a nice nap!

@swurlygurl: haha I did this with her last time! I sat in the back and gave her one small piece at a time. Baby girl loves her eats, so luckily this is always an option

@looch: Thanks for the toy ideas! She is rear facing, which makes it hard because I know she wants to see us.

Stickers might be good, a buckle toy, some of those Plan Toys nuts and bolts, a magnadoodle?

I'd be careful if your rear facing, eating and watching an ipad...bring towels in case of motion sickness on those windy mountain roads!

Food? :( Car rides for us are bad if they're longer than 10 minutes (luckily we rarely drive further than 10 minutes with her in the car), and food is the only good distraction. Things that take a loooong time to chew... haha

Long drives (and I mean, over 1/2 hr or anything in the dark) were usually really awful until the iPad. On our drives to the mountain (also 6-7 hrs), I try to time the drive to leave right before a nap. No iPad. Just a toy bar and a stuffed animal. If she wakes up after a good nap, she gets to watch something. She's in a phase of throwing everything though, so toys (besides the toy bar), don't usually keep her happy.

We are leaving soon to go on vacation to the mountains. Fun times, except it's a 6 hour drive and my 12 month old does NOT like being in her car seat very long. Our last driving trip was a disaster, so I'm looking for any recommendations on your LOs' favorite toys to play with in the car!
