My washer has a prewash button and slot for soap. Sometimes I use that, sometimes I just do a quick wash cycle first before the regular wash and extra rinse. I don't think just a rinse cycle on my washer has enough water to do the job.

Don't be afraid it mess around with it. You'll be able to smell if they aren't clean. Sometimes if my liners or covers still smell but everything else is fine, I throw those back in for a quick wash with some oxiclean and that does the job.

@mediagirl- I currently cloth diaper my daughter and my routine is this-

Wash on cold with arm and hammer sensitive and oxiclean
Do an extra rinse after it is done just to make sure all the soap is gone.
Throw in dryer

I like to keep it simple :)

@mediagirl: your first wash is getting all the yuckies out, so feces and pee residue. The second wash actually gets them clean. You don't want to put them back on your kid when they've been agitating in dirty water

@jennlin821: I got some Charlie Banana's off a craigslist post and I'm pretty happy with them so far, thanks for the recommendation! I'm researching how to wash diapers on Fluff Love and don't understand pre wash and main wash. It says to put a certain amount of detergent in during prewash and another amount in during main wash. I don't get it. I have a front loader and have no idea how to separate the detergents (even after looking at the washing machine index info). Do you run one wash as prewash then have to turn the washer on again for a main wash? I feel ridiculous asking this but it just isn't clicking with me.

ETA: figured out the prewash thing by searching the facebook group. They suggest doing two loads every wash - seems so excessive!!

@foodiebee: I did not see a significant increase in utility bills when I was doing cloth laundry vs now when I'm not. I would skip the portable washer, I just can't imagine that having enough agitation to get your diapers properly clean. If you have an he it is only using the water you need so shouldn't be tons extra.

I would also plan to use tide or a similar mainstream detergent to wash your diapers. I've tried to make seventh generation work and it just doesn't get them as clean with the natural surfactants. I also do a bleach wash on my inserts (and my covers when needed) about every 6 weeks just to keep any yuckies from building up. Fluff love will tell you if your wash routine is good you won't get buildup but I haven't found that to be the case, no matter what I try they get a bit musty after awhile

I already have a sprayer from my first so we will likely spray ebf poop just to keep staining down but not necessary until baby is eating solids (but if you're buying one anyway buy it early. It makes things so much easier!)

@foodiebee: I have HE machines. I don't pay my water, but I only do two loads a week. I do double cycle (quick wash followed by hot and heavy). I line dry outside 9 months a year. That really helps. I also use prefolds instead of microfiber inserts and find they dry better and clean easier

@foodiebee: right! when EBF it's all water soluble so no need for a sprayer. I put off getting a sprayer until 12 months and used liners until then, but I like my sprayer so much I wish I had gotten it around 6 months. Either way, you don't need it right away.

I was just jumping over here to ask if we needed a sprayer if we're planning to EBF, but it looks like the answer is no, correct? Is that until it gets more solid (we're planning to EBF until 6 months, then gradually begin Baby-Led Solids)?

We use Seventh Generation for our HE front-loader. Looks like I still have lots of research to do! Need to check out Fluff Love U from the sound of it.

I've CD'ed 2 kids and have tried BG pockets and AIOS, Rumparooz pockets, and Thirsties pockets and duo wraps.

My favorite ended up being Thirsties pockets with velcro (easiest to adjust and get the tightest fit). We use about 8-10 Thirsties pockets and 20 or so BG pockets (plus 3-4 BG Freetimes) in our current rotation and I'm happiest with the pockets. The Thirsties have more absorbency and I like the velcro, but the BG work very well and have held up well through 2 babies.

I liked the Thirsties duo wraps over a pad-folded newborn prefold in the early days when we were changing constantly, but they're not practical for daycare or older babies who don't like to sit still for diaper changes.

ETA: We also have 4 Grovia Ones for nighttime use but they are hard to get a tight fit on my girl.

@mediagirl: Also I boost with hemp for nap and overnight. It doesn’t absorb super quickly, but holds a TON. So I don’t use it by itself (pair with bamboo or cotton or MF to absorb the first flood).

@mediagirl: what I like about hemp is that it absorbs a ton and is thin. It washes up really well in my front loader. Microfiber doesn't wash well and seems to lose it's absorbancy.

@mediagirl: they are prone to compression leaks - like in the car seat - but mostly because they wear out after a while. We used them with LO1 until they stopped absorbing enough around 10-12 months. They did work fine (other than the occasional car seat or carrier leak) until then. But now I prefer our current set up.

We’ve been CDing for 4.5 yrs now, not counting the gap between kids. We use pockets exclusively and use both BG 4.0s (or 5.0s) but stuff with prefolds instead of MF (learned that the hard way) and also Lalabyes with the bamboo inserts they come with. Love both. Use BG for daycare and it works great - I think the stretchy tabs make it easier. Plus the elastics were simple to replace between kids since my chunk stretched them out. Though the Lalabyes didn’t need it 🤷‍♀️

@jennlin821: great point about Charlie Banana - I didn't realize the difference. I ordered a set of Alva's from Amazon and I think now that I know this, I'll order some CB's, too.

@jennlin821: do you just check into amazon here and there for sales or do you set up a monitoring tool for the sales?

@maddyz: we have a few of those but they are bigger than the Fuzzibunz we have so we haven't used them yet. I like that they are the same style.

We tried the prefolds and covers but our daughter's orthopedist noticed the covers restricted her movement some in her legs so, we are going to go the pocket route because those don't seem to do the same thing.

@mediagirl: no matter what I did, my son always leaked with cloth diapers so my suggestion is what not to use: microfiber and Thirsties All in One.
I used Alva pockets and they're ok.... I have hard water, that might be the problem?
Osocozy inserts also worked pretty well: https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m67795268511/?gclsrc=aw.ds&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=1660066209&utm_content=t0&adgroup=69489854088&network=g&device=c&merchant_id=117157658&product_id=m67795268511&product_id=530940267025&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3N2m0oab4AIVARFpCh2zHwqkEAQYAyABEgJ2vPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I didn't try a lot of different pocket brands. I liked the way the BG 4.0s fit from about 15lb - 40lb and that worked well for us.

I used flats and covers on the babies when they were tiny... and my oldest was about 43lb when we potty trained and part of the reason we did was he wasn't fitting in the diapers anymore.

edited to add that most 2.5 year olds are not 45lb and you might get a longer time out of them....

@foodiebee: Its a great idea! We did the same thing.
We started with:

6 Charlie Bananas
6 Alvas
3 Grovias (6 snap in inserts)
2 Bumgenius all in ones

The we ended up likeing the Charlie bananas the best, for the reasons stated above, and I ended up building my stash through amazon sales and used lots on ebay. We bought more Alvas to round out the stash.

We didn't like the grovias until DD was about 7 months old, and now I love them. because they don't have microfiber, they are our go to diaper for outdoor stuff, like long walks, playing at the park, etc. If our stash wasn't so big, I would get more of these.

We did not like the bumgenius. They never fit DD very well. They rarely get used, and I keep thinking abour selling them!

For a while we also used Thirsties covers with GMD fitteds, as an overnight solution, but it didn't work that well for us.

GROVIA ONES are what we use for overnights, and have worked great from 6 months continuing on to now (2yrs).

So we just started using the diapers part time as she outgrew the newborn disposables which was an easy way to figure it out. Then when she went to daycare, we just dove in, and never looked back!

I'm here for any questions, feel free to continue asking here, or wall me :)

We want to cloth diaper so following this! I've registered for the Charlie Banana brand but think we should get one of a few brands to touch/see before the babe arrives. Anyone think this is a worthwhile exercise? It's our first kiddo and first foray into all of this.
