@babybean404: they are discount retail chains that carry tools, hardware, etc. I'm not sure where you are located, but in my experience, for a project like this, the goods are much cheaper than a Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. The quality might not be as great, but your don't actually need the latches to withstand much, just some curious fingers

One of the biggest hits on our latch board is actually those little guards that are put behind doors so doorknobs don't go through the drywall. They make a "boing!" noise. They are like $1 for 2

Thanks for all the suggestions! We may do a latch board. What types of stores are harbor freight and menards?

@babybean404: we made a latch board for DD, it includes more than the YHL or Melissa + Doug board and it wasn't even close to $35. I recommend cruising the aisles of Harbor Freight and Menard's, if available to you. Those specific locations have latches + accessories for cheap.

@babybean404: what about looking at doing just an IKEA hack? I wonder if there isn't a way to turn a coffee table into a water table cheaper?

Also for a water table all my kids care about is the water. They don't use the spouts water falls etc.

We've planned a playdate next week to build DIY water tables with friends. But there's a catch...the price of the supplies for the DIY ones appears to be higher than the cost of highly rated tables on amazon.

So I'm hoping to suggest a replacement activity that will actually save money! I was thinking of a latches board, but the one they made at Young House Love cost $35 (same as the Melissa and Doug board).

Has anyone seen (or done) any similar projects that would be fun to make with another family, appropriate for kids around 2 years old, and actually save money?
