Hmm....

Eyes on the Prize (a classic re: history of Civil Rights)

Almost anything by Ken Burns - Civil War, Prohibition,

Hiro Dreams of Sushi - I know someone on HB said they hated it, but I liked it. Don't watch it hungry, especially if you like sushi.

Beats, Rhymes & Life - doc on A Tribe Called Quest. If you like 90's hip hop, this is really good.

Food, Inc. - this almost made DH a vegetarian.

The Up Series - 7Up, 14 Up, 21Up (follows a set of Brits and interviews them every 7 years). 56 Up just came out

I want to see:
Marley
No Impact Man
Waiting for Superman
Man on Wire
The Business of Being Born
finish When the Levees Broke

@ladyfingers: It's AP English Language. After the test I just focus on social issues, so pretty much anything goes. The Dr. Death might work well for my 10th graders (high level class) when they read Night.

Jesus Camp

I used to watch a TON of documentaries, but I can't remember a lot of them at the moment. :/

The Woman Who Wasn't There
Whole
My Brother's Keeper
My Kid Could Paint That
Dear Zachary (Not for the faint of heart... I hesitate to recommend even. very sad and intense)
The Bridge
Sound and Fury

I kind of love documentaries.

@Zippylef OMG I forgot about Exit Through the Gift Shop - what an amazing film that was. I saw it twice in the theater, and DH, my friend and I sat in his car outside our apartment with the engine running for like 45 minutes because we couldn't stop discussing it!

@Mrs Green Grass: Dr. Death is also a really fascinating one, he's a Holocaust denier whose stance ruined his career as a top execution technician. Very dark and maybe risky for high schoolers, but I think it makes for some really interesting discussion (obviously not about whether the Holocaust happened or not, ha).

I show documentaries to my AP students after the AP test. Are any of those good for school/discussion?

We usually watch Food Inc. although it's not streaming on Netflix anymore : ( This year we watched Forks over Knives and Bully. Bully is really good!

We've also watched The History of the Bloods and Crips and one about Meth.

The Business of Being Born (I dunno, I liked it)
I really enjoyed the Life After People series the History channel did
I actually thought the Cathouse ones on HBO were pretty interesting too.

The Queen of Versailles, How to Survive a Plague and Into the Abyss have all been on my list for a while.

I love almost every "American Experience" from PBS that's out there. I'll watch just about anything Ken Burns does - The Civil War, The Dust Bowl, The War, The National Parks: America's Best Idea.

Being from Michigan, I used to be a huge Michael Moore fan. When I was growing up living out in the country, people just didn't go to Flint unless they worked in the auto plant. Then those closed. Roger and Me is a sad but true depiction.

I go on random documentary kicks sometimes. What are your favorites? Some of mine:

- American Movie: wannabe filmmaker makes horror movie to fund his Citizen Kane. Amazing supporting characters. I actually know Mike's Schank's cousin! She said he's super nice but the movie totally portrays him accurately.
- Jesus Camp
- Best Worst Movie: The cult of Troll 2
- Roger & Me: Back before Michael Moore went off the rails
- The Fog of War: Fascinating film about former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara
- Capturing the Friedmans: Disturbing yet fascinating portrait of a family coping with the actions of the patriarch.
- A Thin Blue Line: The original "innocent man on death row" story.
