We love the outer banks! But that might be tough if you only want a couple days. Asheville is great too :) or carolina beach nc!

Similar to @autumnleaves:, I was going to suggest Asheville, but that might not be "away" enough. They have some great parks and some really family friendly hikes. Plus, just about every restaurant or bar is family friendly. Get a vacation rental with a view, and after the kids go to bed, you can drink some local beer/wine and look at the mountains.

This is what we're doing in September :)

@BelugaBean: I like Brevard and Boone. There are some easy trails in the Brevard area that lead to waterfalls and more trails off the BRP near Boone - some are stroller friendly and others you'd need to wear your 9 month old.

Crescent Beach / ST Augustine, Florida?!
We were there in 2011 for a family vacation with DH's family. His nieces were 4 and 2 then. We had a blast and would love to bring our girls one day.
Crescent beach was so pretty and clean. Quiet too! ST Augustine was like 20 minutes away and a really quaint town.

@BelugaBean: Fripp island? Right next to Hilton Head island, but not as popular so may be cheaper. You get around by golf cart, which you can rent there. And there are 2-3 community pools, as well as the beaches. The water there is super calm, so great for kids.

DH has 30 days off from work coming up soon. We were thinking of going somewhere for just a couple of nights for LO1's birthday in July. I'm trying to find a location that's very budget friendly (he won't get paid for these 30 days) and good for a 9 month old and a 4 year old. I've looked at tons of beaches but maybe someone has off the beaten trail ideas? Or anything else? We're good with relaxing a bit with just one or two activities (or if it's a beach, we can just relax).
