Love Ikea - our closest are a couple hours away each so we only go every couple years when we're really in need of something specific.

In our house right now we have a Lyksele futon (it's more of a loveseat length but a full-size bed), the Sundvik kid's table and chairs, the Antilop high chair, Forsiktig step stools, a larger Bekvam step ladder in our kitchen, two sizes of Knodd bins with lids (used first as diaper pails, one for cloth wiht a liner and another for disposable - now used for recycling), Lack floating shelves, various little table lamps, some deep plates/bowls and coffee mugs we've used near daily for about 8 yrs now, a few different rugs over the years with good success, Sanela curtains in our living room (gorgeous), various textiles - throw pillow covers/inserts, fabric, etc, and lots of little things like toy cars and the train track set.

We also now have a half-Ikea kitchen. We installed cabinetry in our kitchen on a wall that was just a fridge when we moved in. It goes over the fridge (corner) and has a tall pull-out pantry unit, with a shallow low cabinet next to that. It matched our '50's wood cabinets surprisingly well and we found paint for the other cabinets to match and unified it all with drawer pulls and knobs. We also installed butcher block countertops throughout the kitchen that are SO PRETTY and super durable and easy to care for. Added a vintage-looking glass flushmount ceiling light to the kitchen that they don't seem to carry anymore, and an Alang light fixture to the laundry room.

Ha we are totally an Ikea house too: Kallax bookshelves, Hemnes dressers and bedside tables, mattresses for both us and our son, crib, ALLLL the toys and stuffies and the play kitchen, tableware as mentioned, as well as their cheap side tables seem to be the perfect height for a kids table and are like $10. We have several of their baskets and bins as well as the cheap kids stools for the playroom. I LOVE Ikea ha! It’s 2 mins away from our house and we (mostly me) enjoy taking DS and he loves it because of the fro yo at the end. We go walk around there quite a bit in winter when it’s bad weather. My parents make us take them when they come visit. Oh I also stock up on napkins and we have their 365 tablecloths and placemats too. Their animal stuffies are so cute and they have such good variety! We have a pig, elephant, rabbit, etc.

Ditto on the kallax, and the ikea ones are sturdier than versions I've seen that come from Amazon or wayfair.

@agold: I actually enjoy going to ikea with the kids. We go about once a year when the weather is bad and it gives them a chance to walk around and explore some place new. Although you will be spending most of your time on the kids and not shopping. If you are taking 2 kids I'd recommend 2 adults, though. :silly:

@agold patio stuff: applaro table (it extends) and armchairs. we bought removable cushions for the chairs on amazon, and a matching umbrella. with the cushions they arepretty comfortable. we also bought the applaro wall panels and covered a whole wall in our backyard that had an ugly fence on it.

As far as hacks, search pinterest. Ikea has such great basic stuff that you can add to and make look expensive and custom... A few we have done:
We bought the basic play kitchen and modified it with a "backsplash" made of foam board and marble look contact paper over the counter part to make it match our actual kitchen.
Latt kids table and chairs- painted the wood parts and covered the seat with fabric from ikea.
Hemnes dresser: painted and added fun pulls to make a changing table
Malm chest: painted and added fun pulls to make it look like a campaign chest.
Billy bookcases: surrounded our tv with them and added trim so they look like built ins.
Kitchen cabinets: floated a set of shiny white wall cabinets 6" off the floor, topped with a piece of MDF and added pulls to make it look like a built in buffet.

I love their kitchens, if you're going to install them yourself. But since our condo required a contractor, ours was going to charge more to put together and install ikea versus hang pre-assembled ones as an FYI.

@Mommy Finger: This sounds great!! :silly:

@lioneyes: OMG. I would love to hear more about your "hacks". Can you please explain? Is that where you modify the item somehow or use it for something different than intended? I will definitely do the play kitchen for a Christmas present. And that you so much for mentioning patio furniture! I am looking to get some but the style I want is so dang expensive. And I see ikea has something similar. Can you tell me which one you have and is it comfortable? Also.. yes to cabinets. My friend did an ikea kitchen and it looks great. I will keep it in mind if we ever get around to doing the bathroom cabinets.

Our entire house is ikea (hacks)! For kids: Love all the toys/stuffed animals, play kitchen, bath towels, unpainted wood dressers to jazz up, malm bed and mattress, flaxa pull out trundle bed, crib and mattress, norsborg fabric loveseat, Kallax shelves, play table and little chairs, throw pillows, rugs. For the house: huge fan of their sinks/sink cabinets for bathroom remodels, billy bookcases are so versatile, have wooden outdoor table and chairs that have lasted through two wet and snowy winters, constantly use all kitchen tools/ tupperware/organization tools (like their heavy paper boxes and magazine racks).

I'll be honest, if you can get to Ikea during the week, it's not that bad. I used to work near one and would run there on my lunch break. Also, if your kids are old enough to go to the playland there, it's amazing! You get an hour for free so that frees you up to shop. We used to drop off my older son there and keep my younger one in the cart while we shopped. Now that my little is potty trained, I think they both can go. Seriously thinking of going there in the winter when it's cold so they can play and I can hang out in the cafe with a book. :)

@Foodnerd81: We’ve only had it 3-4 months, but after leaving it outside the whole time during all this heat and rain it’s slightly warped on the top on one side. It’s not a big deal to me though. My toddler eats lunch and messy popsicles on it constantly so I knew it would get a little beat up! We’ll stain it when the weather turns and store it inside though.

We also have this table and chairs set that gets used for art and playdough, and occasional meals in the living room. It cleans up great with a magic eraser and I don't mind if it gets damaged since it was so inexpensive. We've had it for 4 years though and it's still in good shape. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50178411/

@agold: I like the super basic $20 high chair, if you will be needing one of those. The kallax book shelves are great for storage but the size that you want really depends on where you are putting them.

I do really like their kids tableware. I have a bunch from the Kalas line and they’ve held up well and stack well in the cabinet. https://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/50192959/

Will any of you share your favorite Ikea items that you have in your home? I am going to be purchasing an ikea crib today online and having it shipped to my house, but I'm also going to be moving into a new house very soon so I am interested in a few more items to bundle up into this purchase/shipping. Ikea is so big and I'm not too familiar with their things. I am going to get a Hemnes shoe cabinet and bench for my garage. But is there anything else you guys love for your homes that I should consider? I have an Ikea store near me, but it seems so big and crazy and with two little kids, I have no desire to go there in person. Thanks for your ideas!
