@Mrs. Goose: we only do water but never had a mold issue in the contigo. Have had issues with the cap leaking because a little rubber piece got loose though. But to the mold thing- I'm pretty bad about leaving the water cup out overnight and stuff and never had a problem.

Thermos funtainer is amazing. We've left iced water in it all day in a hot car and still had ice.
Or milk - I've forgotten it in his little backpack and the next day I was afraid to open it and smell it but it was still cold (probably drinkable) milk.
Def can't turn it upside down but by 4 I'd think that's not a problem.

We all use hydroflask with the straw or sport spout. Keeps water cold for days, even when left in the car in 95 degree weather! They also have fabulous customer service. I bought three straw spouts and they all had a defect, hydroflask replaced them all for free.

I love the Thermos Funtainers, and right now a lot of them are on sale at Target for back to school. They are easy for the kids to open (my 4yo struggled with the Contigo), and they stay ice cold all day. They're just as good as my faux-Yeti cup.

@Foodnerd81: @gingerbebe: I figured the weird button thing would be tricky. Thanks. So hard to find the perfect bottle/cup I feel. I wonder if my kiddo could handle pulling open the straw. Any mild issues ever? Do all the parts come apart for cleaning?

We use a zoujirushi stainless steel mug. DS and DD both have one. They are super insulating! I've put ice in them and even if I leave it over night and go to wash it in the morning the ice is still there only half melted! We've used thermos before too however it didn't keep things cold or warm as long as the zoujirushi. They are kind of pricey, but DS's has lasted over 1 year and a half and it still looks brand new, and he is rough on everything.

@Mrs. Goose: You do not have to push the button to drink. You just suck it out. The button is to snap the straw part open and close. You fold the straw nozzle to close, push the button to snap it open. DS1 has been able to use it since 2.5 years old. Its not completely leakproof - like if he sits there and shakes it upside down a little can dribble out, but not really bad.

ETA: there is an autoseal one - the push the button to drink out of a non-straw spout - but its too hard for my almost 3 year old - he doesn't have big enough hands and strength to do it.

@Mrs. Goose: there were two types of tops, the one where you have to push that even I could hardly figure it out, and the regular straw top. They are interchangeable on the bottoms. So basically I only use the straw top on the stainless bottom.

@gingerbebe: maybe this is what I saw at Costco. I don't remember if there was a state or not but they were stainless steel and you have to push the button to drink. I guess similar to adult thermoses. How old were your kids when get started using them?

@Foodnerd81: do you find your kids know how to use this properly? I saw them on the week d at Costco and it said you have to push the button while you suck to get liquid out? I think? If it's totally leak proof I'd be a big fan. I only use them for water, but my toddler is in a stage of exploration/ doing things on purpose that she knows she shouldn't like pouring water everywhere...

@gingerbebe: I have a foogoo stainless waterbottle and I love it for my toddler, but the leaking from the little spout hole/air hole? Is ridiculous. She can hold it upside down and it just freely pours in a thin stream from the little hole. :(

I was going to say the same as @gingerbebe: - we have thermos foogo stainless insulated bottles that are nice and easy to clean, and just about fit in the cup holder in her car seat. And we have a contigo insulated stainless steel one that I like too. It has a different straw than my regular contigo ones that I like better. Neither have ever leaked if I closed them correctly.

ETA: I think it's this one, but I got it in a pack at Costco. http://www.gocontigo.com/10-oz-autospout-striker-chill-kids-stainless-water-bottle.html?utm_source=google_shopping&m=Configurable&272=709&aid=1239&gclid=EAIaIQobChMItdmYrNKT1QIV2oWzCh1XegE4EAQYASABEgJCd_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

My kids use Foogo or Funtainer straw thermoses for milk in their lunches and they stay nice and cold most of the day.

However, I use Contigo Gizmo straw cups for water, but if they wanted insulated ones, I would probably just use the stainless version of this same cup, as its my favorite for water.
