@graceandjoy: The Hanna Andersson ones are great for smaller kids (my small for her age 3.5 year old and her average sized big sister both like them); I'm not sure if they are in stock right now though. Old Navy Kids pleated masks are a really good fit for my 6 and 8 year olds (she's smaller as well)...the Cat & Jack masks are big; they fit me (not that I like the cut or prints my kids had selected, haha).

If there are any Canadians looking for masks, I just got some I'd ordered from Bien Aller and I really like them - a good size, toggles to adjust the ears, and a nice firm wire across the nose. On the other hand the ones I ordered from Take Care Supply were not great, no nose wire and they were really long, I felt like I could have stuffed a pretty substantial beard in there and still been covered. :)

@graceandjoy: I used tiny rubber bands to make the ears fit on the Target masks. I'm using kids hair ties. It's the only thing that fits my 3 and 5 year olds.

We love ones that someone local makes but they are $15 for one and with 2 kids heading back to school I needed more! But most commercial kid options (aka Target) are too big for them. I just ordered from Januu; will report back!

I just wanted to come back and update - we ordered more masks from vistaprint since we loved the ones we had. But the new ones are completely different: thinner more slippery fabric, poor stitching, nose bridge piece is flimsy, and part that goes under the chin doesn’t have the same structure to it, and the shape/size of the masks are very inconsistent. We are incredibly disappointed. I can no longer recommend them based on the new ones - sorry if people get them and are disappointed!

We just got some kid and adult sizes from Jaanuu and they are super soft, comfortable and breathable. They’re only two layers (and one is mesh) so maybe not the most effective?? But I’d definitely say they have the best chance at being worn all day by my 4 and 8 year olds. https://www.jaanuu.com/face-masks?color=black&size=adult

@wrkbrk: filters are just extra layers you put inside the mask (usually made from nonwoven/melt blown fabrics). Additional layers are good, as long as you can still breathe well through the mask. It’s also apparently helpful to have different types of fabric layered together, so for example if you have a 100% cotton mask and add a polypropylene filter in the pocket, it’s more effective than adding another cotton layer. The vented masks are not good because they filter air coming in, but not exhaled air, which defeats the whole purpose of masking (i.e. keeping your potentially germy exhalations from spreading easily all around you).

I’ve made all our masks and haven’t tried any commercially-produced ones, so I have no idea what any of them are like! But my DD and I prefer the fitted style while DH likes the pleated kind better.

@wrkbrk: the ones with the vents are the problematic ones, not the filtered masks. (my understanding anyway!)

We have these and really like them. We had trouble finding ones that fit my small five year old but these worked well. She has a variety of kid sizes and we even got one that will fit my 16mo when she’s a little older and ready to wear a mask. The elastic goes behind the head instead of over the ears so it is more comfortable for my kid. Shipped fast too. https://www.etsy.com/listing/779400832/4-sizes-kids-adult-face-mask-with-filter?ref=yr_purchases

We have tried a ton and all prefer masks from Joah Love. They’re soft T-shirt feeling material with easily adjustable ear loops. I got kids size for my 2 and 5 year olds, and adult s/m for my 7 year old and myself. They are pricey but no one minds wearing them so worth it!

For my son (4) we have 3 of hers and they have been great:
What is the deal with filters? I heard they make the mask less effective but maybe that was inaccurate?

@catgirl: I got some on your recommendation and they arrived today! Kids are fans after having elastic ear loops in ones I made. It took about what it said to ship (which was maybe a month or more). Do you add a filter? They do seem thin but I could see that helping in the heat.

We got some gap ones also and they are pretty big - like still kind of loose on my 8.5 year old (maybe her face is small, they looked the same on the 5 year old!). But overall they seem comfy enough, $15 for 3 and they shipped at a normal speed.

Our favorite masks, for adults and kids, are the vistaprint ones. The ear pieces are soft and adjustable. There is an extra piece of fabric that kind of goes under your chin. And there is a metal nosepiece to help shape to your face. DH wears them for 9+ hour days, five days a week. DD has only worn hers for short periods but she can get it on herself and finds it comfortable.

The downsides are that they are pricey and take forever to ship.
