No, I always start with the side I finished on last...it's always the same - she only goes a few minutes.

I football-ed on my left and cc on my right. Now that he is older its usually cc, side lying or some contortionist position :)

In the first 3 months, only cross cradle would work. Now I can do cradle which is nice. We also do side lying, but sometimes it just feels awkward because her bottom arm is underneath me . . . and because I have to climb over her to give her the opposite boob.

Side lying! We used side lying almost exclusively after the first few weeks. DS was such a back archer from reflux that it was uncomfortable for both of us any other way.

@autumn865: sorry to reply to an older post, but we're going through a phase like this as well...cross cradle for right she'll stay on for 8-13minutes, but only 3-4 on the left. If I do football for the left, she stays on for 15 or so. When did your LO start this, and when did it stop? I wonder if she just likes laying that way and not the other...sometimes I wish she could talk so she could tell me what's going on!!

DD likes cradle hold now she's got latching down. I have a small chest so she is the perfect height. She went through this phase on my left side only wanting football which was difficult because I just could not get her to a comfortable height for me. Thank goodness she's past that!

We pretty much always used cradle or cross-cradle, with the occasional football thrown in there. I was never super comfortable in the side-lying and the laid back just never worked for LO.

I never use cradle hold, I think it is awkward (probably because I have ginormous boobs - H cup) I need to be able to support them with my hand. I use cross cradle if we are out and I am nursing in the car or in a nursing room, and football hold 90% of the time.

So far we alternate between cc and football. I like football for when he's fussy because I can direct his latch better and his hands aren't in the way as much. But it can take me awhile to get it set up where he's propped up enough for me, so we do cc the rest of the time. I have large breasts and had latching problems early on so laid back and cradle don't work well. I'd love to try side lying though I'm afraid I'd fall asleep!

We do either cradle or laid back during the day, depending on which breast she is eating from. One side lets down really quickly and laid back lets her control it a bit better by nursing "up hill". At night we almost exclusively use side-lying. Its so much easier the sitting up, especially when I was healing from my c-section.

We could never get side-lying or laid-back to work for us. In the beginning, we almost exclusively used football - it was easiest for me since I had a c-section. At around 2 or 3 months we switched to cross-cradle almost exclusively. Now that she's 15 months, we rarely nurse out of the house, but if we do, I have her sit up.

Side lying is my absolute favorite! So relaxing and I love that he usually passes out and I can just sneak away while he sleeps or nap with him or just cuddle next to him while he sleeps. When he was a newborn, cross cradle was the only one I could figure out.

We had a kick @$$ nurse come see us the morning I was being discharged and she showed me football, I haven't looked back since!!! I loved that I could nurse her one handed (once her head got bigger... she was dwarfed by my boob for a long time!) and it just felt mor natural for me. At around 4 months we mastered side lying and that became a saviour during her sleep regressions, and in the early morning when DH was getting ready for work but she and I could still snuggle :)

When he was a newborn to infant stages we pretty much exclusively used the football hold. We loved it and I loved how he'd always fall asleep curled up against my side after nursing. At 6 weeks old we mastered side-lying and that's how we did all our night feedings after that.

But for 6 months+ once he outgrew football we do cradle and CC.

The only one that has never worked was lying back because he likes to rest his head and lay, and that position didn't allow him to so he would get frustrated. Even at 11 months if I try it he hates it.

Oh! and there have been a few times we did the sitting up method, like in the airplane when his feet would kick other passengers! So I also voted other.

we had quite a bit of trouble BF'ing the first few months and so I had to use cross cradle more than I should have -- ended up with crazy back/shoulder/wrist/forearm pain for a while! i should have switched to cradle hold earlier than i did!!

At the hospital all the nurses tried to teach LO to latch in the cross-cradle position, but LO and I just didn't like it! DD freaked out whenever someone pushed on her head or neck, and I couldn't get positioned comfortably. My midwife and the La Leche League book were big proponents of "laid back nursing," but we couldn't get that one right either.

I loved the cradle hold though, and we use that pretty much exclusively. Now that DD is bigger and stronger, we're getting really good at side lying nursing too!

What are your favorite nursing positions? Did anyone else have trouble with positions that are supposed to be really helpful?
