@lamariniere: oh definitely helmet. We already have a bike one for her balance bike that she knows she has to wear. (She even reminds me when I don't put it on if she's only riding it for a minute before we go home).

@SugarplumsMom: she was playing with a micro mini yesterday and pushes herself on it well. I can't say she steers it or anything. And she has small feet. But for the money I do want something that lasts a while.

The micro maxi has three wheels, correct?

At what age do you think kids make the switch to two wheels? My son's got a 3 wheel one (he's 5.5 and he handles it well) but our neighbor has a 2 wheel one and she can't manage it at all. I was thinking of upgrading him to a 2 wheel, but not so sure now.

We have a Micro Mini and a Micro Maxi. I would definitely buy the Micro Maxi again (we bought the Mini long before the Maxi was available). Definitely get a helmet with the scooter! Both of my kids have fallen off when getting stuck in holes or going over a curb and basically face-planted. It's a good thing they had helmets!

Micro mini is great and I definitely think it's better than the radio flyer.

LO has a micro mini and I'm really happy with the build quality. However, if your LO already knows how to ride, I'd stick with the maxi. LO is turning 4 soon and although the height is still ideal, the footbed is small (can't accommodate big feet).

We got the Micro Mini for DS's 2nd birthday, and he was able to figure out how to use it within a few minutes. I really like it and I'm glad we spent a little more, instead of realizing we'd bought something cheap that he's unable to use and then wonder if the expensive one was really worth it - which we've done before!

We originally bought one of those $30 scooters from Walmart or whatever. DS liked it, but had trouble getting around on it.

We ended up splurging for the micro maxi and he had no problem riding it, from day 1. He was only 2 when he got it and has some motor issues, so I was shocked at how well he could use it. I definitely think it's worth it.

I got this scooter in pink for my niece for her 3rd birthday. My SIL says she likes it.

They also have it at Target.

@PinkElephant: so true! She never gets hurt doing things I think are dangerous because she is careful doing them. But then she doesn't pay attention while she's walking down the street and trips on the sidewalk.

@Foodnerd81: right. Honestly, my kids' skinned knees and elbows come from running in the sidewalk, never the scooter! They're on and off so much I feel like other pads wouldn't getvput back on anyway.

Oh follow up question- just helmets when they ride a scooter, right? No elbow and knee pads for a toddler in the playground?

After doing a lot of research on these, we got a Globber scooter for DS2 for his 2nd birthday last month.
https://www.amazon.com/Globber-Wheel-Adjustable-Height-Scooter/dp/B00WASU1OU
We had a 3 wheel radio flyer and I was unimpressed, it was very hard to turn (even for an adult).
I found a lot of reviews online comparing the Globber to the Micro and they were comparable, if not better. I guess the product is relatively new.
So far have been really happy with it and DS2 loves it. It has a no slip surface and the handle can be easily taken off for when we take it places with us.
I also got the adjustable one so that it will last until he moves onto a Razor two wheel scooter.

BIL got this scooter for DD1 for her 3rd Birthday:
https://amzn.com/B00OHEJUAG

We really like it, it's well made and very sturdy. Like the Razors, you do have to lean into a turn. I like how the base is a little wider and has a non slip surface.

We have the YBike brand scooters for my 2 and 4 year olds - you can get them for around $50 on sale and I think the quality is pretty comparable to the Micro brand. DD1 had a 3-in-1 with a seat option and adjustable height handlebar (a little oricier), and DD2 just went straight to the Deluxe standing only option, which is a teeny bit taller (but not adjustable in height).

I'm planning to get (or ask a grandparent to get) a scooter for LO's third birthday this summer. She already has a balance bike but seems to prefer playing with other kids' scooters at the playground.

Is the micro maxi that much better than the <$30 radio flyer or similar? What brand or type do you like best for a 3 year old? She's already pretty good at riding them at the playground.
