@Foodnerd81: ha well the good news is you can probably keep doing it for naps even if you don't do it for night time. That's what we do now (although it's not really good news because I am totally screwed when it comes to trying to put him down for a npa without nursing to sleep...).

@hilsy85: yup we separated it for bedtime and it worked. I'm scared to separate it during the motn night! I need to just do it probably.

Eta: typing this with her asleep in my arms because she fell asleep during her morning feeding...

@Foodnerd81: I had the same issue, where LO went down in the beginning of the night fine but needed to nurse to go back to sleep in the MOTN. Basically, You need to separate nursing from sleep. So for us, I had to switch things so nursing was no longer the last thing I did before bed, and for the MOTN, I had to put him back in the crib before he fell asleep while nursing.
I kept one night feed (which gradually turned into 2-3 again with another regression, but that's a whole other story :) ).

We did let her CIO for bedtime and the first night sucked, of course, but she never full cries for more than ten minutes and eventually settled herself after a little more than half an hour. Since then she puts herself to sleep at night so I would say she responds well to it. I will let her fuss herself to sleep for naps if nursing to sleep doesn't work but it's hit or miss, and I don't let her go that long because I know it's harder to fall asleep for naps.

So basically I am ok with CIO but I want to do out the right way and make it easiest on her. And don't want to give mixed signals (like, can I nurse to sleep during motn feeds? Do I cut then out? She's only 4 months so I think one waking is still pretty normal, but 3 isn't necessary.)

Thanks for the responses so far!

Troublesome Tots was really helpful, especially when we dropped the MOTN feeding at just shy of 6 months. I also read No Cry sleep Solution but i do not remember it. I also read some articles on the Isis parenting website.

Ultimately we had to sleep train b/c we moved her out of her Merlin and into a sleep sack and she couldn't figure out how to sleep in it or on her tummy so we had no safe option anymore. So she cried for a bit, but she responded well to it, and I think she cried for a max of 20 min (and it was on and off. I will say that it escalated at one point and I got concerned and then it just kind of stopped immediately. 10 to zero in a second).

Ferbers book, solve your child's sleeps problem. It has so much helpful info even if you don't end up going that way. The website troublesome tots also has good info.

No advice-- we're not there yet, just wanted to give you a hug . Do you think CIO will work for C? I'm scared if it comes to it, S won't respond well to it at all... her cries just escalate and she gets more worked up the few times I have had to leave her and walk away for a bit :(

If you sleep trained, what were your favorite resources for information? Books, websites? I think we may bite the bullet next weekend or the one after but I want to be prepared. Going to bed at night is ok, but I need info about dealing with motn wake ups and naps.

Links are extra appreciated!

I did read the No Cty Sleep Solution, but I think this may take just a little but I'd CIO. :(
