You should get to a baby wearing group and try out different carries. Oh, and try out a woven wrap there. My babies aren't that big yet so I can't really suggest anything, but I do love my beco, fly tai and my woven wraps. I do have a tula but I think I'm going to sell them.

I have a LilleBaby Airflow and you really can't beat it for keeping babies cool. It's super comfortable for both of us and pretty easy to put on/off. Only downside is the panel is a bit short for larger kids and it's a bit bulky when you're packing it. They sell them at Buy Buy Baby, if you want to try it out!

Look into getting Solar Connecta (they have up to preschool size I believe). They are not US based, but there should be US retailers that sell them too. Specifically, if it's hot all the time where you are, look into a the SOLAR WEAVE... It's made from swim trunk material and can even go into the water. Lots of people in my local group have them and I'm super tempted to get one for the summer too! If you can find a used one they only go for like $80-90!

I have a Boba 3G (the only difference between it and the 4G is the newborn insert) and I love it. DD was only 16.5lbs last time I wore her, but I wore her for three hours straight inside and it was so comfortable. Nobody was warm, either. I am petite and I feel like if I were a little bigger it would be perfect, so being that you are average it should fit you great!

@mfa_lady: i have a Maya, a sakura bloom, and a sleeping baby productions linen. I use them all. Kind of like wearing scarves, I pick whichever matches my outfit. The linens are cooler for dinner and the Maya is thicker cottonAnd a bit warmer.
Looking at a WCRS because I need all the carriers.

@FliegepilzHut: just going to reiterate that a toddler tula is really really big. My girls are all at the top or above the top of the growth curve and didn't come close to fitting until 1.5 years. The best metric I've seen for sizing says babies move up when they are wearing size 2T pants. Even in 4T my big girl is OK in a standard.

I switched my hunk of a baby to a toddler tula at 9 months and 25 pounds. It might be worth slipping to the bigger size of you plan on carrying for a while.

No time to reply individually right now, but thanks ladies! Sadly, there's no BWI chapter, though there is a local babywearing group...but it sounds like Tula has it...or maybe the Lillebaby Airflow. I was also going to try to lay eyes on a Kinderpack...and Boba 4G, which is carried by a local shop.

If you find a BW group to try some different ones out, it's really helpful! That's where we found the Onya, perfect for sharing between short me, tall husband, and big baby! He's pushing 3, over 3 feet tall, ~34 lbs, and still loves being carried! It's saved our backs on lots of trips, and counting.

I have a Lillebaby all seasons and it's really comfortable. My LO is only 16 pounds though. It has a zipper in the front that opens a panel. There's mesh behind it and it lets some air flow. They also have a model called an Air Flow that is all mesh.

I have a 40"/40lbs not quite 3 year old and until a good year ago we wore him in a Tula with the extenders because he was just tall. It's also really comfy with my 29"/19lbs 13m old. And both DH and I really like using it. I also like to wrap my younger but there is a learning curve to it, so a BWI meetup would be great to try it out.

I had the same experience with the Moby, plus it felt unsupportive once the baby was 12 lbs or so. I ended up buying some white cotton gauze (maybe 6 yards?, for $22) to make my own woven wrap. And by "making", I mean I made one cut to adjust the width and then was ready to use it. The gauze was comfortable even on very hot days.

I stopped using the woven wrap when the baby got more mobile and I wanted to take her in and out more frequently. But maybe I just needed different ways of wrapping.

We have an Ergo that I use with both kids, one a 20 lb. 1-yr old and the other a 30 lb. 2-yr old. It works fine for me and for them, but I haven't tried other SSC.

You didn't ask about this, but we also have backpack carriers. When space/collapsibility isn't an issue, we all like these the best: the weight is distributed more comfortably for the person carrying, the kid has more freedom of movement, and they are up high enough that they can see what's going on.

I wore my average to smallish toddler in the beco until she was 18 months, but she was getting too tall for it by then. The ergo was slightly better, but if I was in your shoes I would get a standard Tula as well. I never used one but really wanted it by the end of last winter.

We use our tulas everyday! I also have an olives and applesauce, but don't use it much anymore.
A standard tula would still last you a long time. The toddlers are huge. We just got one for my older daughter ( 3 in July ) and it just barely fits her. She still fits easily in a standard but it was hard to squeeze the snowsuit in it so that's why we opted to get a toddler one now.

I highly recommend a baby wearing group too, I thought I would love version carriers and hated them and vice versa. A store with carriers might be a good option too.

That being said, I would look into a lillebaby because they have an option to zip down a panel and expose mesh so it's cooler. I also really like the tula, my 16 month old is close to outgrowing the ergo but the tula will last us a bit longer.

I love my wrap but SSCs are definitely faster for me and easier when on the go. The wrap I use mostly at home these days.

I'd try a Tula. They fit bigger kids better than ergo or beco. I can still wear my tall three year old in a standard. She'd be a bit more comfortable in a toddler size but she has two little sisters that are worn more regularly.
I'm not a wrapper (wish I were, they're so beautiful) I always find wrapping took too long and my kids were too impatient.
I like the quick ups of ring slings and buckle carriers.

I love my Tula but I also love to wrap. My boys are ~30 pounds and ~26 pounds and three and two years old. We were almost daily.

Do you have a BWI group near by?

DS is a chunk. He's almost 7 months old (late summer baby). and loves to be carried. We sweltered in the Moby in temps exceeding 70degrees but are still successfully using that. None of the inexpensive SSC we own (and obtained used, an Infantino, etc) have fit well enough to use more than once. I'm average build. What SSC do you think we could get the most use out of before DS outgrows his babywearing days? Or should we try to graduate to a woven wrap?
