@Foodnerd81: we have the northstates deluxe decor gate and love it, we have used it for 3 years without any issue. it swings shut by itself and is sleek. It can be opened up to fill up a wide entry way or can be folded into a standard stairway

@ocean81: ah that's more the price I was looking for, since it included the hardware for both sides. Not as pretty as the wooden ones but whatever.

@MamaG: there isn't really anyplace else that would work with the layout of the bedrooms and bathroom. Good thought though.

We have the same ones as ShootingStar. We have multiple weird, irregular, and wide spaces and these were the only option we could find that worked.

These are pricey, but totally worth it. We have 3 in our house - https://retract-a-gate.com/

Here's our bottom of the stairs set up, we have the same setup at the top. We used a bannister kit on one side and drilled in to the wall on the other.

Is there somewhere else you can put the gate? We had ours in the hallway rather than directly at the top stair. It's hard to tell from the picture if that would be an option for you.

We use the evenflo one. We have iron railings and dh fabricated a brace for that side because drilling wasn't an portion. It's not pretty,, but it works. Two more years and i can take it down!

@Foodnerd81: yeah, one for each side. DD1 is 3.5 and DD2 is 10 weeks so we'll get good use out of the setup. The door can be easily removed when we're not visiting them.

@tinyperson: one for each side? I think that's the same one I saw. It will be up for a long time (the baby is just starting to crawl so I won't trust her for years) so if that's what it takes, so be it. And I'd rather spend the cash than permanently drill into the posts I guess.

We have a similar situation at my parents, and we got the kidco bannister kit. We didn't find another option that would work well...

What gate do you have at the top of your stairs? What's your bannister/ posts/ wall situation up there? The new house has posts on both sides (picture included). I saw a kit that allows you to attach the gate without drilling, great! But $32 for each side, not including the gate itself?! Is that just what it costs?

Please also enjoy the lovely bland 90s wallpaper and brass chandelier. :)
