I got these tinker toy style toys on clearance on barnes and noble and my LO LOVES them. She doesn't know how to put objects together but she just loves sticking the sticks in the wholes and putting the wheels on the sticks. She always makes different things and is really proud of it.

@Coral: i like them because they are a little beefier than magnatiles but also have cutouts so they are easier for little hands to grasp. Magformers have stronger magnets than magnatiles (which could be a good or bad thing). A downside is the magformers have a rounded edge so they can't stand up on their own. Magnatiles are more compatible with off-brands, though. Magnatiles do tend to look a little more scratched up.

Phew. That was a lot of info about plastic magnets. ;)
maybe try a small set of both to see what your LO gravitates towards? They aren't cheap to really build a big set!

We got LO a toddler sized table and chairs for her birthday, which was a hit! We got an indoor/outdoor one, so we've used it both places. She played with most of the other gifts (crayons, books, Little People, etc) she received while sitting at the table.

@Coral: Magformers are the Amazon Deal of the Day! I happened to see them this morning and bought them for DS1. I'm not sure what the difference is between these and the Magnatiles though.

DD will be two next month and I think we might get her a train set. She loves them! Other things she loves right now are play food, dolls, art supplies, blocks, and her magna doodle.

Magnatiles have probably been his most loved toy for over a year now (he's 2.5). V-Tech Go Go Smart Friends (we picked ones that looked like DS1 and the rest of our family, so he loves them and doesn't care that they have technically different names). Some kind of ride-on toy - he loves to push the Carefree Squirrel outside at daycare. Maybe a tricycle? Radio Flyer makes one a parent can push with a handle and then remove later when they can pedal themselves. Angeles makes a pedal-free tricycle that he also loves at daycare, but its sorta expensive so I've just been waiting for him to get older so I can buy a balance two-wheel bike. Play food that he actually loves, like a pizza set or ice cream cone set.

Last year when he was 2, we set him up a patio play area - water table, sand box with sand toys, little kid's picnic table, Adirondack chair set, kiddie pool filled up with ball pit balls, the Little Tikes play sink with some play utensils, and his Cozy Coupe and slide that he already owned. This year we tricked it out with a Bluetooth wireless speaker to blast his jams and a Bubble Blitz bubble machine. We also have some balls to kick around or throw to practice those skills. We might also get him a little kid's broom set because he seems to want to sweep.

@Coral: I bought the magnatiles on MAJOR sale (they were $60), but if I hadn't I would have done the cheaper ones to just try it out. If he loves them, spring for the real ones. Otherwise, you aren't out TOO much money. I will say the easel has been really fun and has less parental involvement.

One toy that really surprised me was a Melissa and doug ice cream scoop set with magnetic scoops of ice cream so you can pretend you're really scooping it and it sticks to the cones. Every single kid that comes over to play LOVES IT. They end up fighting over it, haha. Also, a doll stroller is super popular, enough that I have 2 of them now.

We did outdoor toys for DS's second bday. A baseball tee set and basketball hoop. It was nice to get the toys for our backyard because we didn't have anything and he had an early spring birthday. He plays with the baseball tee almost everyday still. I think we also got him a smaller Duplo set, but he goes through spurts with Duplos/building toys in general.

My DS was also obsessed with his toy shopping cart around that age! He still plays with his regularly.

My 2yo boy loves duplos, wooden blocks, magformers (his sister helps though), any cars/trucks/trains, toy lawnmower, sandbox. He got a micro mini scooter for his bday and looooves it. For Christmas his big toy was a recycling truck with cans! Oh he also loves the drilling set we have (who doesn't love a toy drill?) and a set of toy dinosaurs. Can you tell my kids were the only grandchildren on both sides for a while ...
