can't live without a puffy jacket that comes at least to above the knee. i find that with layering, most puffy jackets suffice even on the coldest days.

I live in Ottawa and a warm parka is a necessity. My grandmother treated me to a Canada Goose jacket when we moved here and I love it and am never cold in it! DH has a North face parka and also finds it warm+++!
While she was still living, I used to call my Nan the first day I wore it each winter, to thank her for keeping me warm!!

I love my Canada goose knee length coat. Super super warm.
For dressier warm coats I swear by J Crew wool with thinsolate, they last forever and are very toasty.

I have a long Columbia down filled coat I used when we lived in Chicago. The key for me is that the inside has a reflective silver coating that reflects body heat back at you. That way, the coat is extra warm and not too puffy. I'm really short, so the super puffy jackets are hard for me to walk in.

For dressier days I have this J.Crew peacoat. It's warm (I've worn in comfortably in snowy weather), but not as warm as my down one. But it's perfect when I want to look nice and not freeze! https://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/outerwear/wool/PRDOVR~49622/49622.jsp

I actually haven't had the greatest luck with down filled coats, after a year of wear, the feathers start popping out, I've bought them at all price points, except North Face level, so I can't speak to those coats.

I prefer the Squall Parka from Lands End.

I have two north face ones, a metropolis (the puffer that everyone seems to have) and the arctic parka. The arctic parka is warmer but heavier/bulkier, so I reserve that one for the coldest days. I think both would be good for NYC weather (I'm in Boston, so it gets a little colder here).

I second or third the suggestions for the North Face down jackets. I have the shorter version. NYC only gets cold enough to really need the long coat a few days a year (as opposed to a place like Michigan), and I found the shorter version was a little more versatile and plenty warm.

Definitely the North Face long down jacket. I've had mine for probably 6 years and couldn't imagine anything else in a city. It's kind of expensive, but my friends who bought something else ended up back at this a few years later.

Brooklyn industries down coat is a classic NYC winter staple... Or something. Down costs aren't my favorite look and it took years for me to finally get one but it kept me warm while standing around the playground all winter.

My favorite coat for winter is a cape I made. The pattern was McCall's M6446, which is out of print now.

I made it from Babyville Boutique PUL diaper fabric in spring green- such a fabulous color for a unique winter coat. It was lined in fleece that matched. The only problem with this was that is was very heavy- wool alone would probably have worked better.

I was commuting to work on my bicycle, so it had to be warm when I needed it to be, but breathable so I didn't get to work drenched and then freeze being sweaty. It worked like a charm! Most days I wore it with a short-sleeved shirt underneath. Colder days I wouldn't want any skin exposed, so I went with a long-sleeved shirt. The coldest windiest days ( a long dreary week at -14F with lots of wind) saw me in my thin wool sweater-shirt.

If I were to make it again, I would not make the hood attached, but would make a matching hat, and just use a warm pretty scarf with the collar turned up. That might require a different pattern, since this one is very wide-necked.

(My cloak also had invisible zippers in the arm slits, to keep things sealed while riding my bike in falling snow.)

I have a few. One is a ski jacket for playing outside. I also want to get a waterproof down coat. For me, the key is that it hits below my hips. Having a cold back is the WORST.
