My favorite childhood book was The Giving Tree. My mom had made a felt story board with different pieces that you'd put on and take off with the story (the boy, man, old man, the various stages of the tree, etc.). I loved when she would read the story and get out the board to go along with it!

Right now i love Oliver Jeffers. The illustrations just melt my heart. My parents may not have given me many toys as a kid, but they never denied me books.

@zippylef: I have most of the Laura Ingalls books and i believe one of them is actually my mom's copy from the 70s.

My LO is only 11 weeks old but I read to her almost everyday, some favorites of mine for her are:

Sandra Boynton
Baby Einstein
Dr. Seuss
Plus a ton of others, but I can't think of the authors right now:)

I second Dr. Seuss! The only books of his that I don't love are the ones that are aimed at early readers--Hop on Pop, Fox in Socks, etc.--and, I know this is going to be unpopular, The Cat in the Hat. I like those books okay, but I don't think they're fabulous. Otherwise, his stuff is pretty much all excellent.

Also, I love Richard Scarry's drawings, but I'm less enamored of his writing.

For older kids or read-alouds when my LO will tolerate it, I like A.A. Milne, Laura Ingalls Wilder, E.B. White, and Charles Dickens. T.S. Eliot is also a favorite, although I prefer his writing that isn't aimed at children to the Narnia series. As a kid, I liked Madeline L'Engle, too.

@LAGS: love the steam shovel! I loved her book the little house too!!

Echo Eric Carle too

As a kid I loved historical fiction; I enjoyed the AG books but there was another series I LOVED but cannot remember the name. I'll have to raid my mom's library when I'm over there next week.

Also loved: Mama Do you Love Me, the Francis books, Beverly Cleary books

What I love now for LO:
Sandra Boynton
Charlie & Lola

I love The Phantom Tollbooth. For younger kids, I liked the Richard Scarry books and a lot of the Little Golden books. The classic Dr. Suess are good, like the Lorax and the Butter Battle Book.

@LAGS: I had a 1st edition set from the 70s as a kid. My grandmother gave it to me. It's destroyed from years of love though.

I had this set, actually. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1971-Little-House-On-The-Prairie-Laura-Ingalls-Wilder-8-Book-Set-/110974428410?pt=US_Childrens_Books&hash=item19d69764fa

I loved the Little House on the Prairie books as a child. I've been on the lookout for a vintage set for C. I also always loved Shel Silverstein.

This was also one of my favorite books. I remember reading it over and over. http://www.amazon.com/The-Smartest-Bear-Brother-Oliver/dp/0440486971

My parents did a great job emphasizing the importance of literature growing up and always made reading fun for us. I really want to do the same for my LO so I'm always looking to build her library.

For Christmas I bought her a Virginia Lee Burton treasury because of how much I loved Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel growing up. I'm also a big fan of anything Eric Carle.

Who are your favorite children's authors, or what are your favorite children's books?
