@runsyellowlites: Honestly, I never grew up with video games or any sort of electronic devices for learning or otherwise. I do play a lot of video games now, but as far as children go, I seem to follow in my parents footsteps and am really disliking all the electronic stimulation. However, it's becoming so mainstream that I'm having a hard time NOT allowing it. I'm caving. I figured that these at least are educational and they will NOT be played until all real paper homework is complete. Especially with our youngest who has a seriously hard time knowing that when we say "time's up" we mean, time's up and he throws a fit. So I'm also trying to balance that as well. It's really been an internal struggle of mine.

@SAHM0811: Thanks! I am totally going to look into the Speller Sight Words. I wonder if that would help our little guy to start recognizing words, which he struggles soooo much with. :(

I'll also check out the math ones too since he's ok with number! :)

We have Endless Alphabet too! My DD hasn't explored that one too much yet, but I will check it out with her soon after reading your review.

She loved Starfall ABCs as a preschooler (both on the computer via their website, and the app), so I got her Starfall Reading recently and she's been enjoying that. The different short stories keep it from being boring.

Another reading app we have is Little Speller Sight Words. Can't review it too much though, as we haven't explored that one too much yet. But it does read the word and allows you to practice writing it too. there are little activities to do also, like tic tac toe with sight words.

She has some books on my phone, like Ladybug Girl and some Disney ones.

For math, we have Team UmiZoomi and Addition & Subtraction For Kids. It's a simple, free app my friend who is a math teacher uses when she tutors. It's free and has a fish that gives you a thumbs up after you answer correctly.

I think we may be the only ones that have iPhones & don't have a single app on either that are *for* G. He's played the occasional game if we're stuck somewhere for an extended period otherwise he doesn't use them.... I wonder if this will change as P gets older. Hmmmm

@T-Mom: yay! I think I found the Endless Alphabet in the Pre-School aged stuff. Like I said, our little guy is behind in any type of literacy (he's 5 and can only spell his name and has trouble recognizing/remembering some letters of the alphabet). So we do some very basic learning with him as far as that goes.

Most of our educational apps are geared for the pre-school set. Such as Park Math, Team Umizoomi app, a Dora app that helps you learn how to write your letters..

Subscribing to see what others are using for beyond preschool and will post back on anything good that I find...

What are some of your favourite educational Apps?

I just got an iPad for my birthday and have been downloading apps to help our youngest (mostly) learn.

He is in kindergarten but a bit behind in literacy, so we've been working really hard on his alphabet and words and stuff.

So far these are a few of my favourite apps:

Endless Alphabet (FREE):

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/endless-alphabet/id591626572?mt=8

This app is so incredibly cute. It starts off at A (obviously) but you can pick whatever letter in the alphabet you want. It presents a word and a bunch of cute monsters run by and mess up all the letters. You have to put the letters back in their proper place. Each time you pick up a letter it makes the sound from the word. (ex. E makes a eh eh eheh eh sound.) .

After you complete the word, there is a couple second skit and then a voice explains what the word means!

Agnitus (FREE):

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/agnitus-games-for-learning/id509343934?mt=8

This app grows with your child. As your child successfully works their way through the little games/questions it increases difficulty. This one is great for parents because it makes up a report card so you can see where your child is excelling and where they are struggling. It reaches out to all subjects which is totally great.

I did this one for the first time last night and after we were done our youngest came and asked to "play the fruit game". I told him it was for after he finished his school homework first and it wasn't something he could just do whenever. He then said "please can I? I really want to do homework". hahahaha

I will add more as I come across them. Feel free to add your own favs!
