Lol, yes if only Bible club was all it took to create outstanding, moral law abiding citizens. It would have saved ME a whole lot of pain and heartache in my early 20's, I can tell ya that  . But alas, I had to learn character building and maturity the same as everyone else--slowly, surely, and through my mistakes and experiences.

@scotchbonnet: Yes they can. A friend of mine was apart of Christian Crusaders club at his HS. This was also the same pal that was arrested for having pot in his car while in college. So the Bible doesn't stop people from breaking the law. Hmm I'm starting to feel at least vindicated in my thoughts at least. I A agree I should not have posted.

I would just ignore the post. But on a slightly different topic of Bibles in schools, kids CAN read the Bible in school. Kids can form bible clubs, have programs, whatever. We did that in my high school because it falls under "after school club." You just need a teacher/faculty to be willing to supervise. We put on programmes, met after school, did all kinds of cool things as a club, and it was open to any students who wanted to come check it out. It was fun to have that space with like-minded as a Christian teenager in high school.

There are many images and opinions on Facebook I have to ignore! I wish people were only allowed to share personal photos of their family and pets!

A) Statements like that make my blood boil. I wouldnt hesitate to go after a public school that tried to indoctrinate my kid. What faith my child is is MY business.

B) Yes, I would have said something. I probably would have been less civil about it too.

Also, does she realize how many of the truly vile, sick, serial killer type criminals were Christians? For real, Jeffrey Dahmer, David Berkowitz, Andrea Yates, BTK, etc. A lot of the most depraved, prolific ones were all strictly Christian and even fundamentalist and killed "in the name of God". So the Bible = less crime thing is truly a sack of BS.

Umm, yes, I most definitely would have commented. Statements like that are ludicrous and have no basis in reality, so I therefore have no qualms about calling people out on it.

I don't know exactly how I would have worded my comment but it would have been something along the lines of there being no place for the bible to be taught in our public schools. People of all faiths attend public schools and to teach the religious beliefs of one group, to the exclusion of others, is not only discriminatory, but it also flies in the face of religious freedom. If a parent feels their child should be taught the lessons of the bible in school, then they have the freedom to enroll them in a school that caters to their religious denomination, but it is absolutely not ok to force religious beliefs upon all other children who may, or may not, hold the same beliefs.

I also think it's ludicrous to believe that if people were exposed to the bible in their youth, they would avoid a life of crime. There are so many social factors that lead one to criminal behavior that I find it very hard to believe a few minutes of bible study every day in school would override everything else. I also don't think the bible is exactly a model of the way we should treat others......but that might be leading in to a whole different topic so I'll leave it there.

@meganmp: Exactly. My husband teaches 3rd grade and they just cut their music and art teachers, so the regular teachers are now required to cover those as well. Crazy!

My view as a Christian is that you can't teach the Bible without also teaching about other religions. Since that generally isn't possible, it's not going to work.

I see these things on fb as well and I try to ignore them because they annoy me and it usually just turns into a big argument between the people who comment.

If I had to teach religion on top of everything else, people would have even more to complain about, because I would have EVEN LESS TIME to teach reading, writing, math, social studies, science, health, and (god forbid) art.

EDIT: I didn't answer the question. I think I would have said something, but only because I'm a teacher. I'm not sure if I would have otherwise, but I get pretty feisty (read: a bitch) when it comes to stuff like that.

Well, if this is about allowing bibles in schools: I think students should be free to pray and read bible in school (as long as it doesn't interrupt with classes). That is a freedom. Just as anyone could bring a Quran or the like. It's a fundamental liberty to practice faith without oppression.

A FB friend aka friendly sister in law of DH's bff shared a pic of a prisoner in his jail cell reading the Bible. The caption was something to the effect of "Bibles are allowed in prison and if they were allowed in schools he probably wouldn't have ended up in jail."

Really!?

My knee jerk response was something like 'school is for reading, writing, and arithmetic and parents should instill faith.'

I really do not like religion in public school because there is always a group left out. Teach it, don't preach it.

Anyway she responded that 'God should be with us always, teachers aren't even doing a great job educating and what she does for her daughter is okay and what I do with mine is my business. '

I actually agree with most of her comment, but when you start saying you want kids reading the Bible in public school that affects my kid and that's not cool. In fact I want to "like" her comment, but detail the part I disagree with. Since that would be awkward I'm commenting here. LOL

First, let me ask would you have even commented?
Second, do you think I am thinking about this too much? She is really lovely and I don't want things to be weird IRL.
