Yes, DD started telling me that she was scared of things right around 2. I guess it's a normal phase to go through.

@Mrs. Jacks: True for us, too! It satrted right around the same time (21 months, right about when DS was born). It's been kind of evolving for us; sometimes DD is scared of one thing, sometimes another. But I've found that just validating her fears and giving her some tools to deal with them has helped (e.g. she has a special phrase to say when she gets scared of something and needs us).

Oh! My 19-month-old is terrified of the scale at the doctor's office! Last visit he was hanging on to me and i wasnt holding him at all. He cries harder for having to lay on that than he does getting a shot!

He's also afraid of most livestock (like goats and such) in real life but not in photos.

It used to be that he would only cry if he was sleepy or teething but now I have to question if he's scared of something!

@sloaneandpuffy: Well, that's probably part of it too! Lala was 21 months when we brought M home and it all coincided... but the fears are developmentally normal!

@Mrs. Jacks: thanks! I thought maybe he was getting clingy and weird about having a new baby in the family, but I guess it's much more than that!

Totally developmentally normal. Kids who have been completely rock solid until then will develop fears of some rather irrational things. For Lala's dear friend it was fireworks and for Lala it was bunnies and chickens (don't ask!)

As they become more independent, fears are a healthy protective mechanism.

@Honeybee: Oh! That makes a lot of sense. It kind of freaked me out when I found him in the middle of the night all scared in his crib. Poor thing.

My little 21 month old has become easily frightened in the past few days. When he hears footsteps upstairs, for example, it's "mamamamama!" and jumping into my lap. We live an apartment so this is normal!

I am not sure if this has to do with his age or maybe the fact that he'll be a big bro i the next few weeks (something I'm not sure he understands but may generally sense). Any insight? Did your toddler go through a scaredy cat phase?
