Basically same answer as your cup thread. Both my boys were slow to self feed. DS1 wasn't self feeding until close to 1 and even then we were spoonfeeding most of his meals and gave him finger foods to try with. He's almost 3 and eats fine and uses utensils and everything.

DS2 is 14 months and he has been able to self feed since close to 1 but prefers to be spoonfed most of the time because he gets his food faster. He can even feed himself with a preloaded spoon but again, many times just plain refuses to self feed and throws all his food off his tray until someone feeds him.

Both guys liked puffs and mum mums and yogurt melts, watermelon, and bits of banana. Once they had more teeth they liked small soft (overcooked) pasta (or Mac n cheese), bits of sticky rice, blueberries, soft steamed broccoli, grapes and soft steamed carrots.

Basically, don't worry about it.

@Goldengirl: It isn't a lot of work because I am still on mat leave. I make big batches of purees and freeze them. My purees are simple but I make a lot at once and then pull out what I need for the next day out of the freezer where I have a stock pile. I make a lot of straight fruit purees (strawberry, pear, Apple, mango and blueberry). I also make mix fruit and veggie purees (broccoli & pear, seeet potato/carrot/apple). For breakfast he has baby cereal and then Yoghurt mixed with a fruit puree. Then he has one of the veggie mixes for lunch and dinner with finger foods. If I wasn't on mat leave this would be more time consuming. Plus I have so much stock piled at this point I don't really need to make more. I figure in another month or two he'll be pretty done with the purees.

@delight: He loves eating Mushies which are like puffs... but they're so small and really hard to pick up so I don't see him getting the hang of that for awhile. So you're doing a puree and finger foods with every meal? Just seems like so much work! :silly:

@catlady: Oh boo! That sounds frustrating. Maybe he's just being stubborn or not quite ready. We have the same issue where he won't attempt to self-feed, but he will eat anything from a spoon/my hand. I've also noticed he doesn't put things in his mouth, in general (like objects that shouldn't go in there). Does yours? I'm thinking maybe that's connected...

Following. We have this problem but even worse because mine won't eat purees from us either. He clamps his mouth shut if I offer food. If I put food in front of him, he either ignores it completely, grabs it and just bangs it on the table, or tosses it on the floor. No attempt to put food in his mouth.

My daughter naturally put everything in her mouth (which thankfully included food) and I never realized how easy it was to get her to eat.

There's a good book on baby led weaning which is sort of what you are doing. It's by gill rapley. Don't overthink it! Give him a good or two to try every day. You can give them almost anything within reason, even steak to gnaw on. As far as vegetables, you can give whole but maybe just cook them so they are a bit softer. I wouldn't kill yourself to offer a three part meal.
Avocado slices, bits of orange, slices of melon, cucumbers, toast sticks, whatever!
The only way my kid would eat a purée was via a pouch. She only ate Non-puréed foods.

I think all kids are different when it comes to food. Our DD had no interest in anything except purees until 10 months.
Our DS now at 8 months can't get enough. He has 3 meals a day and snacks. For his meals he has a puree fruit/veggie and then I give him pieces of whatever else we are eating. If it's meat I cut up small and otherwise I give him long pieces that he can hold on to (like cucumber, pepper, mango). About a month ago we started with little puffs and baby mum mums, then Cheerios until he figured out how to pick everything up and put in his mouth. That took at least a week. Maybe try some of the Gerber puffs on his tray for now so he can just practice picking up and putting in his mouth? It does take a lot of coordination! The self feeding will come. It's ok to spoon feed or offer it from your fingers. I'd just keep putting stuff on his tray though to encourage him to play with it and learn to figure out how to get it to his mouth on his own.

More FTM questions for you wise ladies!

LO is 8 months and so far has shown very little/no interest in self-feeding, but loves eating. He'll play with food but doesn't attempt to put it into his own mouth and if I help guide him, he mostly gets angry and just wants me to do it for him.

I've started giving him finger foods but because he doesn't want/know how to feed himself, he'll just eat right out of my hand. He seems to love anything I give him, which is great.

-Is it okay to be feeding him finger foods like this, when he can't feed them to himself? Will he eventually just pick something up and put it in his mouth?

-How do I know how much to give him per meal? I've been feeding solids 3 times a day. Should I be giving snacks in between too? With purees, I found it easy to know how much to give and know if he had enough, but with the little bits of food, I'm having trouble telling if it's enough or if I should be giving more.

-Should I still be giving purees in addition to the finger foods?

-Any recommendations for things to give him? Is it okay to just be giving one food at a time (for instance, last night for "dinner" he had pieces of broccoli), or should I be giving a protein/veg/fruit at every meal? I'm confused between the "food before 1 is just for fun" and worrying if he's getting the right balance/enough food!

THANK YOU!!
