Once he's gained his birth weight you shouldn't need to wake him at night.

@Becksabee: in that case I would stop waking him at night! Or did the pedi say that you had to keep doing that? And then see how often he wants to eat during the day.

He was a few oz below birthweight at his 2 week checkup so that was a couple weeks ago. The pediatrician didn't suggest a number of feedings per day, but she did say the jaundice is gone and it seems that he can tell us when he's hungry now. I've been feeding him every 3 hours, so 8 times per day currently.

Originally, he was up all night and sleeping through the day, but now he's awake for longer stretches during the day and just takes a few long naps. He sleeps at night, but once we wake him up to feed him, it takes him a bit to fall back asleep again.

How many feedings per day does your pediatrician suggest per day?

We fed on demand and hardly ever had to wake LO during the day. I would only wake LO during the day only if she was behind on the number of feedings she was supposed to have that day.

Do you feel like he has his day and nights straightened out? If not, it might help to continue feeding him more often during the day and letting him go longer stretches at night so he gets them straight. I don't have much advice on the schedule aspect, unfortunately...so he's still a few oz below birthweight?

My LO had jaundice from birth and was never eating well due to not being able to stay awake. I was exclusively breastfeeding and he lost 15% of his body weight. Pediatrician had us supplement with formula (I also don't produce enough) and a week later he was back almost to his birth weight - only a few ounces below. Nursing wasn't really working, so I've been just pumping and either giving him pumped milk or formula - about 30% breast milk and 70% formula.

I've been feeding him on a schedule since - he's almost 4 weeks old. I wake him up every 3 hours even at night, but lately he's not always so interested in eating every 3 hours. We're feeding on demand at night, but waking him if he goes more than 4 hours. I'm wondering if I should be doing the same during the daytime, or just let him sleep unless he goes past the 4 hours.
