@Thehistoryofus: I have a good stash built up in the freezer.... Not sure exactly how much but at least 70 bags of 5oz milk. It dates back to mid March so we rotate them out and we are giving him 1 bag @ day..... but nowadays he usually drink only 2-3 oz of it and we'd have to toss the rest away. How I wish I stored them 2-oz @ bag.

@Thehistoryofus: @MamaCate: @ElisaT: Thanks for the suggestions. If I nurse on demand, he would probably eat every 5+ hours. He seldom cries for food since 3 or 4 months old, except at night (he'd wake up once at night for a feeding).

Today I nursed exclusively. Other than the first feeding at 7am which he was normal, he would nurse around 3-4 mins each side ("normally" 6-8 mins @ side). If I continue to offer and not pick him up, he would start crying hysterically but when I stand him up, he'd start giggling. My breasts also doesn't feel engorged anymore. I hope I am not drying up already (and I am pumping after the last feed of the day as I am typing this).

If he's gaining weight fine, I'd not be concerned at all. The fact that he drops from 75-90% at 2 months to 25-50% at 6 months, gained only 13 oz last 2 months, stalled at the same weight for about 10 days now, never seems to be hungry, and only eats 1-3 oz every 3 hours, drives me bananas. I miss those newborn days when he was so hungry all the time and would suck me dry. I used to be so afraid of hearing him cry because I feel like I had nothing in me, and how I wished those days would be gone ASAP. Be careful what you wished for.

I think I am going to make an appointment with the GI and see what they say.

@Mrs. Superhero: He definitely is not nursing more. I tried to offer more times but he'd just cry.

My schedule is very similar to @mamacate but it fluctuates a bit daily depending on LO. On week days LO gets bottles of expressed milk at approximately every 3 goes but we try to keep her on a on-demand schedule. If she wakes up early from a nap and is hungry, she has a bottle. Some days she finishes her 5 oz bottles and some days, she has 3-4 oz then finishes the remaining amount before her next nap. I do the same on weekends when I nurse exclusively, and sometimes that does mean more frequent feedings if she's having a growth spurt or teething. We don't try to push for her to finish any set amount so she controls her intake. LO just started solids two weeks ago and averages 1 oz once a day but some days she doesn't have any since we are still adjusting to it. I've been making her mashed avocados, sweet potatoes, and now she's onto applesauce. It's still practice eating now and she gets most of her nutrition through BM. Maybe you can do what PP suggests and feed on-demand for a few days to see if your LO finds a new groove?

I would add in that if it is warm where you are, remember that he could nurse more if he's thirsty. I try not to worry about how often they nurse in warm weather.

@irene: I totally agree with @Thehistoryofus about focusing on the nursing over the solids. On demand for a few days is a great idea. If he only wants 2-3 oz of milk at a feeding, that is probably okay if he has more frequent feedings. It could be teeth or just random variations...You could try on demand for a day and spacing out to every 4 hours for a day and see what works--once you try one thing, you can always try something else.

I also think at this age (and in general) it is important to let them eat until they lose interest and not push it. I think otherwise you may risk setting it up as a power struggle over eating. It is a big adjustment to start eating solids for LO so you want to be patient with him as he gets used to the idea.

How much of a freezer stash do you have? Can you feed completely on demand for 3-4 days? I personally wouldn't have pushed that last ounce at 11:30 I would have just fed early at 12:30 like you did. If he only takes two ounces let him go until he's hungry again (may be in thirty minutes may r two hours) and then offer as much as he will take.

Also try not to worry about spacings of the feedings. I would be looking at total intake over a 24 hr period.

@Thehistoryofus: thanks for the tip.... Should I cut back on his solids then? (2tbs of cereal mix w breast milk 2 times a day). I've been trying I make him finish his food because of his low milk intake..... I just don't know what to do with him anymore. It's like I want to do something, anything to prevent him
From dropping below 25% on weight but it just seems inevitable.

@MamaCate: we just got back from Australia (19 hr difference) but he has adjusted his jet lag already. Funny thing is he was eating fine in australia. Then he had his 6 month vaccines on Wednesday. And teething had been an ongoing problem (2 bottom teeth has cut through 3 weeks ago).

He has been having these sessions since 2.5 months where he would only eat 2-3 oz per feed for weeks. Then his weight gain hasn't been great he seemed to have stalled again this week. I notice that 2-3 oz phase has come back since last week so I am very concerned. Our nanny suggested to space out his feedings to every 4 hours but I just don't know if it were the right thing to do.

I agree. Food before one is just for fun!

Make sure he's getting milk so you ensure he's getting the nutrients and then just use food as extra bonus.

Once she really started eating she would "eat" about every two hours.

6 am - nurse
8 am - bottle
10 am - solids
12 pm - bottle
2 pm - solids
4 pm - bottle
5 pm - comfort nurse or more if she missed earlier bottle
6pm - light solids/snack
7-8 pm - nurse to sleep
1 overnight nurse usually.

Eventually we moved to two bottles and three servings of solids at 9 months.

I didnt vote because the routine we have LO isnt in even intervals. I will say that i expected nursing to decrease with solids but sstill haavent seen a huge change at 8 months.
Here is our rough schedule:
730 nurse
10 bottle at daycare (5 1/2 oz)
2 pm bottle at daycare
5 pm nurse at home
630 or 7 nurse and bed
Then one night feeding usually between 1 and 4 am.
LO has been eaating at these tmes since 4-5 mos. When we starteed solicds we did one meal n the evening. Then after a few weeks we added one at mdday and are just now adding a morning meal.

Take yourtime with solids and try not to stress. LO gets most of his nutrittion from milk for a long time. Is there anything else going on that may affect his nursing?

EBF moms: Do you start spacing out your feedings to 4 hours @ feed when your LO was 6 months? How did you do it? How much do your LO drink+eat @ feed? What is your schedule like?

I am not sure if my son is normal anymore but we've been feeding him every 2.5-3 hours. It has been working fine until now. Recently he is not hungry at his regular feeding times anymore. For example, he nursed at 645am and had 2TBS of oatmeal at 7:30-8a. Then he only ate 2 oz at his regular 10am feeding. It took great struggle to get him to eat another oz before his naptime at 11:30a. Then at 12:30 he couldn't nap and he cried. I thought he was hungry so I nursed him but I believe he took only 2 oz (his normal feeding time was at 1p) . Then again, at 2-ish I think our nanny made him eat 1 more oz. At the 3:30p feeding, after much struggle, he drank 5 oz, and then some oatmeal afterwards. Then he nursed maybe 3 oz before bed at 7pm.

We just started solids last Saturday. In the old days before solids, the good times he usually took 4-6 oz 6 times a day.

Is this consider normal for a 6 months old who just started solids? is it time to space out the feedings to every 4 hours? The thing is he didn't even eat that much solids, maybe 1-2 TBS of cereal mixed with 2-3 tbs of breastmilk 2 times a day. He also hasn't been gaining weight well (He only gained 13 oz between 4-6 months) and that's why I am so concerned.

Another thing is, if you do start spacing it out to every 4 hours, will it impact your milk supply? Or it doesn't matter because milk supply is supposed to tank starting now?
