@raintreebee: that's great! Constantly feeding him during the day but letting him sleep at night is a good way to establish days/nights too!

Thanks, ladies. We have been letting him sleep at night thanks to your advice, although he typically only goes 3 hours at night without eating (2 hours in the day). At 3.5 weeks old, he is now 2 lbs 2 oz above his birthweight!

We woke her to eat until she was three weeks old mainly for the sake of establishing good milk supply.

I did pretty much exactly like you...3 hours and one 4 hour stretch. I did this for a very long time, probably 4 months...but I had a 25-weeker who was always below the curve for weight.

I think I would base it on overall intake for the day...if you can drop a feed and still have a good intake, that should work. We were giving lo 24cal formula and fortified bm. He never ate a ton (19 or so ounces a day) and so we felt a ton of pressure to keep the numerous feedings.

He's still a bit small, but at a year he eats similarly to his peers, but for a long time he had more feeding than they did. (He also has reflux which was a big factor in feeding for us.)

We still wake for daytime feedings and he will be 3 months tomorrow. He hasn't been the best weight gainer and so we need to be sure he's getting enough nutrients each day. At night we let him sleep though.

I'm hoping we can stop waking to feed him soon. But it's all tied to his weight.

I stopped at around 3 weeks. I just looked up the stats and my LO weighed 6 lbs 3 oz when I stopped waking her up to feed. She was born at 38 weeks at 5 lbs 2 oz due to placental issues/IUGR.

I continued feeding her about every 2-3 hours during the day and took her to the breastfeeding support group 3 times a week to be weighed until she was 12 weeks to make sure she kept gaining though.

At her 15 month appt, she was 80% for height and 48% for weight. They certainly don't stay small forever!

Ooh, I need to add that we always woke him up to eat every 3 hours during the day. We would only let him sleep through the feedings after 10pm.

@petunia354: I agree with this. This is what we did (even though our dude was never a great sleeper!)

We stopped once we saw that he was gaining steadily. We waited until after his 3 week visit to make sure :)

I think as long as he is gaining weight steadily you should be able to let him sleep as long as he wants at night, but I'd keep up with your feeding schedule during the day...

I hope it is okay for me to use this board. DS is not technically a preemie since he was born a few hours past 37 weeks. He had a low percentile birth weight (6 pounds) due to suspected placenta problems but nothing too severe. In the hospital, he dropped weight rapidly, losing about 11.5%. We immediately began supplementing with formula, and once my milk came in, supplemented with pumped breast milk. Never letting him go more than 3 hours without feeding during the day, we got him back up to his birth weight within a week. We still don't let him go longer than 3 hours during the day (he usually eats every 2.5) but let him sleep 4 hours at night. He is now 2.5 weeks old and a pound over his birth weight. So he is doing really well.

My question is when to stop waking him up to feed every 3 hours during the day and 4 hours at night. I know a lot of people do this once birth weight is regained, but we just feel like he needs more time to catch up since he was a borderline preemie. Then again, I just hate waking him up all the time since he also needs his rest. Any advice would be much appreciated!
