@Weagle: This is probably a stupid question, but what does SMH stand for?

@blackbird: I agree!!! I don't think the main woman is like that though - she's never talked me about this stuff and I know she knows how to do paced feeding and holds Xander up right, so I think she knows what she's doing more than this other woman. This other woman works with the older babies who are already on solids and stuff, so I don't think I have to worry too much about her. Though who knows what else she's misinformed about!

@Adira: Sounds more like early teething. Babies chew on themselves all the time. LO is 11 months and still does it as he's working on molars right now. It sounds like you're doing everything right. I wouldn't worry too much.

@Cherrybee: Oh my gosh, I saw that picture of you being fed chocolate as a baby!!! It's crazy the things people used to do!

I have nothing against formula or starting solids earlier than six months, but I think six weeks is a bit extreme! And telling me that my breast milk isn't substantial is just hokey!

@Adira: My SIL gave her son rice cereal in his bottles when he was 4 weeks old and both her and my MIL tried to convince us that we really needed to do that, that babies in their family are just hungrier than normal babies. And he's only 8, so this wasn't decades ago. Ummm, no... he's just fine, thanks.

@cascademom: It's definitely possible that he's going through a growth spurt, but her reason for thinking he was hungry was that he was chewing on his fist, which he does all the time, so that's not really an indication to me. And he hasn't seemed any hungrier than normal at home, so I who knows!

@swedishfish: It's crazy how much things have changed from back then to now!!

@cmomma17: You would think that with all these babies, many of them probably chew on their hands, so you'd think the providers would know it's not a sign of hunger! But the woman I spoke to deals with the older infants more, so maybe she really just doesn't know.

My mum took all her parenting advice from my godmother who was about 20 years older than my mum. I was fed formula right from the start. They started me on little bits of pureed adult food (cooked with salt no doubt) when I was just a few weeks old and were giving me chocolate to suck on when I was 5 weeks (I posted a pic on here a few days ago). Oh and for the record, I have asthma, eczema, gestational diabetes with a high risk of type 2 in the future and a sensitivity to wheat.

Stick to your guns (which I know you will). Anyone telling you that is crazy!

@Adira: @Mrsbells: Right!! And she was trying to tell me that breast milk has no substance! I was like "Have you not LOOKED at my breast milk in the fridge?? It's got a huge layer of fat floating on top!"

Xander could be growth spurting, so he might be consuming more too. I remember those same pressures from our daycare when he was growing and feeling my breast milk wasn't enough. I also think that daycare professionals need to be better educated on breast milk and breastfeeding through a few books and Kellymom. It might help dispel some of the myths they present to FTMs at daycares.

@cascademom: I was actually really surprised that Xander was the only baby at my daycare on breast milk. I guess all the other babies drink formula, which the daycare providers probably prefer. And I agree! We definitely don't want to start solids early! Especially just because other people do it.

@Adira: I was told that by my daycare as well. DH and I disagreed with that and soldiered on with breastmilk until he was 8 months old. I think daycare workers like formula better because of the ease of use. Also, solids really young can lead to obesity later in life.

Yes this is crazy, but it was suggested to me so many times to help LO gain weight. I only agreed when my pediatrician suggested it because her acid reflux was so bad she wasn't keeping anything down so we tried rice with her formula to see if being thicker worked...it didn't so I stopped.

Another woman was also there picking up her baby and she thought I was crazy for waiting too. She said she started her baby on solids at 3.5 months and now at 6 months, she gobbles down solids like it's no one's business. She's also only 15 lbs.

Then the daycare lady was all "Right! Feed these babies solids! I bet your baby sleeps so well now that she's eating so much." And the woman was all "Actually, she still wakes in the middle of the night for a bottle!" So I got to say "Well, Xander's sleeping through the night, so I don't think he's hungry." Bam! In your face, lady! I'm such a bitch. :)

My mom has a gajillion ridiculous recommendations, beginning with my favorite, to boil rice, discard the rice and use the starchy water to make formula....now keep in mind this is what they did when my now 50 year old aunt was born in post WWII Italy, but it still blows my mind.

@zippylef: Well it's weird, because this woman's daughter is only 11, so it's not like she's THAT old. And my mom didn't feed us until we were six months, so definitely not every one did it! I would also think that since she takes care of babies all day, she might be more knowledgeable about the current recommendations...?

Xander (4.5mo) is in daycare full time. His primary caregiver is on vacation this week, so there are these random women watching him. On Monday, they told me he was getting hungry 30 minutes earlier than normal and could they PLEASE feed him (apparently they were under the impression I told them to strictly stay on the 3-hour schedule, which I did NOT do). I said if he was hungry, feed him!

Yesterday, the women who talked to me on Monday weren't even there, so I couldn't get any information about his hunger. I asked one of the other women who was there, but she normally watches the older infants, so she didn't know what the deal with. According to his sheet, he was still fed every 3 hours, like normal. The woman I spoke to said she thought that he WAS hungry earlier because he was chewing on his hand (which he does 24/7, so this isn't any indication of anything).

THEN she asked why I wasn't giving him solids yet. Apparently she gave HER babies solids at SIX WEEKS!!!! Then she went on to say that breast milk isn't very substantial and doesn't fill their bellies and really isn't enough. What the what!!!
