@anonysquire: Do they have a vent bag on him? That should be handling most of the gas. Hopefully he has a quick recovery!

Hi there! Hope recovery from surgery goes well. My son D has had a g tube for 5 years, I blogged a lot about it in the first 2 years. Please feel free to ask me any specific questions and I'll try to help. Don't feel guilty, you are making the best choices you can!

Rocky got his gtube today. He’s miserable. I’m going to try and get him up in a little bit for a walk to help with some of the trapped gas.

@anonysquire: I would definitely advocate for a solid food test. You don't want him to become sensitive to taking things in by mouth.

@Ms. RV: awesome info!! Rocky is 20 months so maybe they will do a solid food test at the hospital? He is a great eater and I did tell them that I am concerned that his eating will drop off and I want to avoid that! He’s 13 pounds now so I will make sure to keep an eye on his weight for a new button. My 3.5yr old got his August 10th and hasn’t gained weight yet, so who knows if Rocky will be the same haha.

@anonysquire: At our hospital it is ENT that tries to determine the reason for aspiration so I guess that would be the same? Did they do a solid food swallow test or just liquids? If he fails for solids and liquids he will probably just be on formula but if he passes the cookie test then probably either water or formula for hydration/supplemental nutrition. G is only four months so we haven't gotten to cookies yet, but I asked speech therapy a million questions when he was being seen by them. So it might be completely different in your neck of the woods.

Infinity pumps are awesome. So nice and little.

Oh.. and one thing that they didn't tell me until yesterday... DS went from 7lbs to 15lbs since he got his Mic-Key and apparently every 5lbs you should get a new size when they are little. I would imagine your youngest would fall into a similar thing where if he gets big enough he would need a new size.

@Ms. RV: While they out the tube in they are doing a couple of scopes to see if they can find a reason. He had his first swallow study in July and failed that. So he has a aerodigestive team, ENT, Pulmonology and GI, and they are all following him for this issue. But pulmonology recently bowed out. No idea why. So I guess ENT will try and find the reason for the aspiration? I’m pretty frustrated with his pulmo, after my sons sleep study where he found out he has central sleep apnea he told us, “see you in a year” and offered no solution to the sleep apnea. Actually a different doctor had to order oxygen and cpap for him. Anyways, good times. We have the infinity pump for my older son. One thing I was wondering though, if it’s just for aspiration will he still be in formula? Or won’t I just give him water through the tube when he’s thirsty and with meals and such?

@anonysquire: DS has a g tube for aspiration. He had it placed twelve weeks ago just changed the button yesterday.

Do they know the cause of your DS's aspiration? G has vocal cord paralysis as his cause but last swallow study suggested maybe it is now more of a poor suck-swallow-breathe coordination (though his left cord is still paralyzed).

We are hopefully getting a new swallow study next week but I am less than optimistic it will go well.

Do you have an Enteralite or a Kangaroo Joey pump? We had an Enteralite in the hospital but have a Joey at home and I hope you have an Enteralite. I can't imagine a 20 month old dealing with the behemoth Joey on their back.

My 2nd son is having surgery this week to get a gtube placed in his belly. Even though we were told that he would need a feeding tube in the future, at birth, it feels like a big old fail. My oldest son has a feeding tube for a completely different reason (eating disorder related) and this son is getting one because he aspirates every time he drinks. Anyways I just feel like a crappy mom. For sure our little life could be so much harder!! But I do feel kind of worn out lately, haggard haha.

Any mamas have kids with feeding tubes? And does anyone have one just for aspiration issues?
