@KOzsari: I'm glad you saw a consultant. This is the first time I'm seeing this post and my first reaction is that she is being overfed at the bottle, but it looks like the LC told you that already. If she keeps getting overfed, it can cause a lot of issues.

I'm glad though that you reached out for help. Here's hoping the nursing session times cut down a bit

Thanks so much for the comments, they motivated me to pay for a lactation consultant, I'd been resisting. She taught me how to keep my baby awake during the feeding and not let her hang out. It's better, but often she'll still feed really intensely for 40 minutes, then be hungry 10-30 minutes later or even right away, and that can stretch out for a few hours. She's definitely not the drink for 30 min then sleep for 2 hours kind of baby. She drinks a whole lot of expressed milk from the bottle still and just cries and is hungry when we distract her or take it away. The lactation consultant said she should drink 3 oz not 6 oz, but she just gets so hungry. If she gets 4 oz from the bottle afterward she sucks strong at the breast for another 30 mins. We did a weighed feeding, she's getting plenty, more than 3 oz in 25 mins. She's starting to spit up more these days, don't know why. But the lactation consultant helped a TON with the way I was holding her and how I was breastfeeding, no mom should go without one!! Thanks again.

I was also wondering if its comfort nursing? C would eat for a long time but never two hours I don't think. Your nipples must be so tired! Agree seeing an LC would be good bc that does sound excessive. Have you tried a paci? Maybe that would satisfy the need to suck?

The frequency sounds normal to me.

Can you tell if she's feeding the whole time or do you think some of it is comfort sucking? Xander will often stay on the boob for as long as I let him, but he's definitely not eating the whole time and likes to just nap on me. Do you think your LO might be doing something similar?

I agree with @Kemma: on seeing a Lactation Consultant. If there are issues with latch, they can help you and help figure out how to make sure your LO is transferring correctly.

Long feedings are pretty normal in the early days but it can sometimes be an indicator of a milk transfer issue or latch problems (particularly if you're using nipple shields).

Good weight gain and plenty of wet and dirty diapers are all positive signs but it might be an idea to have a consult with an IBCLC (Board-certified Lactation Consultant) to get baby's latch checked out and possibly doing a weighed feeding.

Hang in there mama and congrats on the new baby!

Hi All, I'm breastfeeding and my one month old has always fed for about 2 hours a feeding. Otfen it stretches out to 3 or 4 hours. Often she takes pauses, sometimes she feeds for hours with very few pauses. She spends even more time no alert and wanting to feed, she doesn't sleep often (nor do I :) ) She rarely feeds less than 1.5 hours, and if she does it's because she just finished a marathon feeding right before. If I put her down before 2 hours is up she moves her mouth and is upset and obviously hungry. She was born with a low weight for her height (6 lb 3 oz, 19 in) but has gained 2 pounds 3 ounces in 1 month and has TONS of dirty and wet diapers, so I know she's getting plenty. She can't latch well so I use nipple shields, but I do often try to ween her off them. Dad feeds her about 4 times a week, once at night, with my expressed milk. He says often goes through 5-7 oz and then still acts hungry. When she does sleep it's for about 2.5-3 hour stretches. Any ideas as to why she's feeding so long? Is it because she goes a long time between feedings (2-3 hour breaks, sometimes)?
Thanks!
