First of all, I'd be upset if my OB's nurse said anything about my weight. I wouldn't worry about 19 lbs. Most doctors say a pound a week, or 40 lbs total is healthy. I gained 30 with mine, and went a week over, and really didn't gain much of it at the end--my prime gain time was my second trimester, I even gained 10 lbs in a month! Every body is different, don't stress and just focus on growing that baby.

That doesn't sound completely unreasonable if you were a healthy weight to start with. Some people just go in fits and spurts, so who knows things may level off for the next few weeks.
Personally, I'm 32 weeks and am currently at 6lbs net weight gain, BUT I gained 40 pounds of fertility treatment/PCOS weight in the six months before getting pregnant, and lost 10 pounds due to morning sickness in the first trimester, so I think my body was just searching for a state of equilibrium.

@char54: I've gained the same amount and due at the same time. I could afford to cut out some sweets but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I gained more and within 9 months was down to within a few pounds of my start weight.
Your body knows what to do.

Unless you're being ridiculous (and you KNOW if you're not!), I wouldn't worry about it!

@char54: I gained almost half my body weight, started at 120 and gained almost 60lbs, and my doctor never said anything (though she did mention something about losing it at my 6 week PP checkup). They do watch for sudden gain because it can be a sign of GD or Pre-E (Pre-E was the case for me). As long as they're not concerned about those issues, I wouldn't worry much.
(also, I did lose every pound and thensome without a mark on me, so it doesn't mean you'll be bigger for life either)

I gained 70 lbs and all the doc ever said was " you gained a bit of weight" and not even in a harsh way, more like a Casual comment. I had a very healthy pregnancy and baby. I have lost all the weight at 1 year pp. your body is doing what it needs to do. Don't worry about it

Oh, hun I am so sorry the nurse made you feel bad!!!! What did your doctor say? I think I was around your stage when I gained a TON of weight. Then, I kind of leveled off until the end. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Sounds like that nurse needs a lesson in sensitivity!!!!!!!!

Ps...this is coming from the girl who gained 50lbs during and lost 55 after pregnancy - go eat your bowl of ice cream and enjoy it!!

19 pounds going into the third trimester? Unless you started way high, that's an absolutely normal amount of weight gain. Also, it really isn't the nurses business. Your doctor/midwife should be the one to council you about your weight gain.

Scales can be weird, too -- when I had my NT scan and bloodwork, the lab needed my weight so they had me hop on the scale. I had a regular appointment scheduled right afterward and my midwife weighed me again, somehow within that hour had magically lost 2.5 pounds. I know I'd had a bunch of water prior to the scan, but no way was it THAT much! So keep in mind that there can be some variation for who knows what reasons....maybe the scale doesn't "lie" but it also may not tell the whole story.

I gained a pile of weight, steadily throughout. It'll be ok! I gained 70 pounds--an amount I couldn't fathom before. 3 weeks pp I'm already down 40. A lot was swelling and such. I think 19 lbs at 27 weeks sounds fine. I was up 40+ by then!

I'm 23 weeks and up 10.2. I kept it about 5lbs through a few weeks ago and then BAM lately. I'm glad to see the above posts about weight gain in the 2nd tri. My goal was 20 or less but my more reasonable goal was 30 or less, so I'm hoping to stay in that range. No advice, just support!!!! Lots of us are there!

@char54: 19lb at 27 weeks sounds pretty good to me! What's she talking about?!! I was overweight pre-pregnancy and had gained a further 7lb by my 9 week appointment. I got a lecture about that from my midwife! By 27 weeks, I'd gained 20lb and everyone was really pleased with me for keeping my weight gain so low!! So that makes no sense at all!

At 34 weeks, since being diagnosed with GD at 28, I have actually lost 3lb and they are more concerned about that (they want to make sure I'm eating enough calories for the baby).

Please don't let this horrible nurse upset you! As long as you are eating good, healthy food, taking your vitamins and drinking lots of water you will be fine and your body will do whatever it wants to do!

@char54: According to this chart, there's a couple ones according to what bmi you have, you're within the normal range. http://www.nal.usda.gov/wicworks/Sharing_Center/NY/prenatalwt_charts.pdf

Not everyone gains the same, I pack on lbs in the beginning (like 7-8 lbs in the first trimester), don't put on any for a bit towards the end of the second, and then finish off with more weight gain. But last time I still ended at 25 lbs. It's good to still eat healthy and exercise but if that's what you're doing then your body is just doing what is good for it.

@char54: I'm at about the same place as you, and my office hasn't said a peep to me about it. I just keep reminding myself that everyone's body is different and handles pregnancy differently. I think my situation was worse though I gained the most in the 1st tri and early 2nd tri, I haven't gained in a few weeks, but I think that just shows how uniquely each of our bodies deals with pregnancy (although I would by lying if I didn't tell you I hope that I hope that gaining continues to stall for a while). As long as you are eating pretty healthy and staying active, I think you are fine, it sucks to gain weight, but if you are being healthy then I think you should feel secure in knowing that your body knows what it is doing to best handle carrying your baby.

I made my big leaps in weight gain in the 2nd tri too. If it's any consolation, I think that gaining more of the weight earlier (and kind of slow and steady) helped prevent stretch marks for me :)

But yeah, I feel your pain and just had to ignore the comments sometimes. I gained 50-55 with twins, which is normal and recommended by many, but my OB (who I otherwise love) gave me a hard time for a few visits. DH vouched for me and told her what my food and exercise habits were, and she backed off after that. Some people's bodies just gain more and some gain less, I think we can control it to some degree, but not entirely.

Hang in there mama, you're doing a great job!

@Modern Daisy: people asked me all the time too, and then would argue that they didn't believe I gained that much. And I had more than one shower guest say they were disappointed that I wasn't as big as a house.....um, thanks?

Your nurse shouldn't have said anything because it isn't really her place. I would ignore her and keep on like you are. You will gain what you gain and then after the baby is here you can work on getting the weight off :)

I cant believe she said that! I gained over 40 and nobody ever said a thing to me. Your body is going to gain weight how it needs to in order to provide for you and baby.

The question I get the most from people is "How much weight have you gained?" I am always shocked when people ask this, because I consider it a pretty personal question and a little inappropriate. Plus, the majority of the time it's asked by someone who just wants to show off how little they gained during their own pregnancy which I think is rude and a little mean.

But to be honest, I've stopped paying attention to the scale and don't even know what the answer is. People look at me like I have two heads when I tell them this, but they just have to deal with it. The fact is, my doctor is not concerned about my weight gain, so why should I be? And if me and my doctor are both okay with my weight gain then I don't understand why everyone else feels they have to be as well!

I gained 60 pounds during my last pregnancy and ended up with gestational hypertension and it was horrible. Honestly, if you're eating rather normal and just gaining a lot of weight, that's one thing, but if your diet has drastically changed I recommend trying to figure out how many calories a day you're actually consuming and going from there.

I know no one wants to hear it when your pregnant, but gaining too much weight is dangerous even if you were thin beforehand (I was a size 2 and 5 foot 8 when I got pregnant with my son).

I'm going to try really hard this time around to not gain that much weight.

I gained ALL my weight during my 2nd tri!
I gained 21lbs by 29w...
And then an additional 9lb by my due date.
I got lectured by my OB ;) but oh we'll, in the end, it only totaled to 30lbs.
I did up my walking and lower my eating (not amount, just removed sweets).
