BIG BIG HUGS  I know it sucks that it's the joyful, merry holiday season but don't feel like you cannot be sad! Be happy when there's something to be happy about, and be sad when things are hard. It's okay

It is ok to not feel in the holiday spirit. There is so much pressure to feel something specific this time of year but it is completely ok to just not have time for that stuff right now. Hopefully next year will be better.

I am sorry you are going through this - that is a lot to deal with. I feel like things are insanely busy now and at the same time I am missing connecting with family and friends. My mom passed away earlier this year and my dad’s health is failing and my siblings and family don’t come together like we used to. It’s harder this time of year but I see the good in my life and I am thankful for that.

@Mrs. Snowflake: I feel you. I work for a financial company. I spend a not insignificant portion of my day telling people, you won't get that money back. It's especially shitty this year because I had a customer commit suicide while they were on the phone with me a few months back. So every single call I know there's the possibility for families to be left hungry for weeks or be evicted. It doesn't help that I've been struggling with money. I'm especially chapped that my boss is spending more to decorate her cube than my kids are getting for Christmas. (She bought lumber, it's a whole thing.)

I’m sorry to hear about your health issues. That sounds like a lot to deal with and I hope you find what works for you soon.

The holidays are tricky because it’s expected that everyone needs to be happy and joyful all the time and put everything negative aside in order not to ‘ruin’ the season. But, I think a lot of people struggle with that depending on their situation so try not to feel that it’s weird or bad that you feel this way. For me, this is the first Christmas without my grandpa and my mom is facing some serious health issues, as well as just regular stuff like stress of having a newborn and a kid going through the terrible 4’s. My default emotion is not necessarily joy this year! But I’m trying to focus on simple, fun little activities and see the holidays through my kids eyes rather than trying to make it into this huge crazy happy holiday time that erases any hardship we have/had. Each year is different so just think how you will feel next Christmas when you’ve had a whole year to adjust your health and wellness...hopefully much better! But don’t stress if you’re not feeling it. That’s just life sometimes.

I’m so sorry you’re struggling with yet another diagnosis. My SIL has gastroparesis, diagnosed about 12 yrs ago when she was just in her early 20s. She had a really rough time adjusting and figuring out what works for her, partially because it’s just a difficult and confusing condition and partially because she was young and a little naive about the changes she would need to make.

I hope you find out what triggers your flares without too much pain or trial and error. And that you can continue to enjoy food and be a foodie in your own new way as you navigate this. I understand it’s different for everyone, but in case it’s helpful, SIL’s main triggers are alcohol, coffee, and the volume/frequency of eating rather than one food or group. Also stress in general (good or bad) is the biggest trigger. Travel and big life changes can manifest as a gastric episode and land her in the hospital if she doesn’t manage them when she starts to see warning signs. She and her fiancé also started eating a primarily vegan diet about 2 yrs ago for non-gastro reasons but she’s found that it’s also helped her flares. And, if it’s something legal where you are and you may be open to it, medical marijuana has been a huge help for her in both preventing and managing pain/nausea with flares.

Sending hugs and healthy thoughts

Yes big hugs! Sometimes life is just too much. I can’t imagine going through everything you are, but in harder times I try to remind myself that every year will not be like this. Everything will not magically resolve, but things will change and hopefully for the better. Also in times I’ve struggled, I’ve found great comfort just venting and finding kindred spirits on these boards!!
I hope your husband finds something soon. The new year is usually much better for looking than end of year. We’ve been there with job loss / not finding something new and it’s such a mental strain.

Hi everyone, this is my first post I am starting in the boards.

But I have completely lost my jolly/"holiday spirit" and I wondered if I could get some advice/support. I normally love this time of year, but things are super hard, especially around my health. I was in the hospital a couple weeks ago, right after Thanksgiving, and found out that in addition to all my other conditions, I likely have gastroparesis, which is a partially paralyzed stomach.

This has been my hardest condition to deal with yet. I love eating. But I'm having to completely learn again what to eat to avoid a flare. if i slip up, which is so easy to do, it causes all day puking and stomach pain.

In addition to this, I am the solo breadwinner right now. My husband is trying desperately to find a new job and things keep not panning out. It is just a really hard time.

I am trying my best but just feel so discouraged.
