Just wanted to leave an update! Today was my LO's baptism and I fed her away from home! We were in the car so it was private and quiet but I was just so happy! I have been held to her eating schedule and not being away from home more then 3 hours until now. It is very freeing to know I can feed her wherever I am :) Thank you everyone for the support :)

I third the pumping and feeding by bottle or nursing in the car. Nursing in the car is not comfy but at least you have some privacy, air conditioning/ heat, etc. I can't count the number of times Wagon Sr. would stand in front of us holding a blanket up to block us from view while we nursed in public. Nursing covers only irritated both myself and the baby even more. Neither of us enjoyed nursing at all (I'm exclusively pumping with my second and loving it) and I really struggled. It does get better after a while when you've gotten more comfortable with it, but I was very relieved to wean at 7 months. Not everyone is that picturesque nursing mom in the corner with the quietly eating baby while she carried on with her friends. You're not alone!! Good luck and you are doing a fantastic job. It's really the most difficult thing, but one of the best things you can try and do for your baby if you can.

Can you check out the room / space for feeding and maybe do a practice feed there before the big day? Or is there anybody you could ask to give you a hand while feeding to make sure you have everything you need?

This breastfeeding is hard work but you're doing a great job!

@autumn865: I had the same problem with my lo. I fed her in public for the first time a month ago. She still kicks but she is getting better about being so crazy on the boob (she is 6 months old today). Can you feed her in the car? That would give you some privacy and allow her to pop on and off, scream, etc without you being worried about what other people think. Also, take a couple of receiving blankets and cover yourself with them to keep from getting soaked. Layer them so if she pulls off one, you still have another one on.

I feel your pain. My husband and I would just shake our heads at the moms who would go out to dinner and sit there quietly feeding their babies while they ate. That would have never happened with our lo. She was a holy terror on the boob until about 5 months....now she at least doesn't scream anymore. :/

Have you tried giving her a bottle at all? You could pump in preparation and give her a bottle while you are out. You can keep pumped breastmilk at room temperature for 5 hours.

It sounds like you are doing great hanging in there! My LO went through a big change with feeding right around 4 months. He became much more efficient as he became more interested in the world around him. He also became more distracted. Your feeding issues may improve on their own and eventually your baby may prefer a stronger let down. But even with that, I recommend using a nursing cover, nursing in the car, and bringing an extra shirt for you. The nursing cover can help the baby focus. Alternatively, you could pump and give bottles that day. Good luck!

My DD is almost 16 weeks and we have had a really rough time with breastfeeding. There was a point where she screamed bloody murder at each and every feeding. I had spoken to her pedi, and two lactation consultants that only told me things that were wrong (forceful letdown, oversupply, flat nipples, reflux) and nothing suggested ever really helped. I came to dread feeding her and us both crying through feedings were a daily thing. Now at 16 weeks things have gotten a little easier although they are not perfect and she has her days where she just cries when I try to feed her. Because of our difficulties I have not been able to ever feed her anywhere but at home. It just dawned on me today that in a month at her baptism I will have to do several feedings away from home throughout the busy day of church and the lunch we are planning. This just fills me with absolute anxiety. In the few times that we have tried to feed away from home (in dressing rooms or ladies lounges at the mall and such) it has been a total utter disaster with her screaming, milk soaking the both of us (sorry TMI) and in the end she's crying and hungry and I rush home to be able to feed her I am now dreading her baptism and don't know what we will do :( Just looking for some words of encouragement, bees. What would you do?
