@Mrs. Blue: nope we were able to keep one feeding! He eats anywhere between 1230 and 230 (or later if he wakes later)--I should probably be stricter about the time frame but I'm not pushing it. He will sometimes wake up one or two other times, like at 1030 or 1130, but he'll cry for a minute and then put himself back to sleep.

@hilsy85: I'm just wandering how everything went now that it's been a few weeks since you started. Did LO drop all his night feedings or did he settle into one wake up?

That's great, it sounds like it went well! I definitely know what you mean about being paranoid when LO looks like his face is mushed into the mattress. There have been many times I've flipped or otherwise moved him, and totally messed up his sleep by doing that!

@cranberryapple: oh man! I would way rather have him wake up at 2:30 or 3 and then sleep til 6:30 than wake up at 5 for the day!! I'm hoping that he wakes up around 2/230 tonight so I can nurse him...I really didn't want to drop all overnight feedings.

We recently night-weaned completely. I wouldn't have minded keeping just one feeding, but I was confused about how to go about it, which is why we just went all the way. DS was waking up 3-4 times a night, but he used to only wake up once at around 2-ish, which I was okay with. But, with waking and eating so much at night, he became a lousy nurser during the daytime and it was a cycle. I was confused like you on how I would know when I should feed him when it wasn't "time", and I suspected that even after I fed him earlier, he would just be up again for the third time. Since night-weaning completely, he eats a LOT more during the day and is surprisingly focused. Ahahahahaha. But, I suspect he is actually really hungry by the morning because now he wakes up at 5AM, and doesn't go back to sleep until his first nap of the day! Oh boy.....

@hilsy85: I totally rolled LO back on to his back last night after finding him face-planted into the mattress. He's 7.5 months and I know it's fine for them to sleep that way but I just couldn't help myself! I was lucky LO went right back to sleep but don't feel bad, I think it's totally normal to be paranoid and take action. :-)

@Smurfette: thanks for asking!

It didn't go too badly last night...falling asleep, he cried for 20 minutes, with checks at 3, 5, and 7 minutes. He woke up at 1am, cried for 2 minutes, fussed for 6, and fell back asleep.

This is where I totally f*cked up. He was out of sight on the monitor and I couldn't see his face. He was on his stomach and I was worried that his face was smushed into the mattress (irrational fear of mine). So I snuck in to check and woke him up :( He then cried for 35 minutes, with checks at 3, 5, 7, and 10 minutes.

THEN he didn't wake up until 6:00! I hadn't fed him at the 1am wakeup, I figured he'd wake around 3 or 4. But he slept straight through. I feel really bad that I messed it up, but I think it went pretty well. We'll see how tonight goes! :)

@Tidybee: We did this! If it was before 4am, DH would go in. I would go in after 20 minutes and feed if she didn't calm down. It actually only took a night or two before she stopped waking up for that feeding at all.

First i'd send DH in to comfort if it's before your feeding time. If he can't get C back down within 10-15 min, I'll gO in and feed her. Just do what you are comfortable with and don't stress out about it.

@hilsy85: How old is he? Depending on age, I would go check after waiting anywhere from 10-20 min after that 1 am wakeup but would not feed. Ex: kIf he's 6-months old, I'd wait 15 minutes before going in, if he's still crying after that I'd go in and soothe, then put right back down the moment he's calm.

Agree with turtledoves that my LO has never stayed up for a full hour just crying in the motn.

Just my 2cents:
Don't give in or else he will literally add another wake-up.
You have to just soothe him back down (paci maybe?) or whatever way you did it when you checked on him at the 3,5,7min interval.
Then, next time he wakes and it has been 8h, then is feed.
Ours will make up sometimes and I know he might want to eat? Maybe? But it's only been like 5h. So, I run on sleep sheep and all that and I walk out. He falls back asleep and wakes up at a good time to eat! Then: I'll feed him. Even then it's half a feeding or water (because he does 12h without food, 98% of the time since being 12w old, so I know he isn't truly hungry).

So we started the sleep training process tonight...eek! LO cried for 20 minutes (with checks at 3, 5, and 7 minutes) before falling asleep--not too bad, I think.

We plan on keeping one night nursing session. I'd like to not feed him until he's gone at least 8 hours--2:30am (which I know he can do because he's done it several times, most recently last night). My question is: what do I do if he wakes up at 2am? or 1:45am? Do I do the checks until he falls asleep and then feed him the next time he wakes? Or do I do the checks until it's 2:30 and then feed him? or just feed him if it's within an hour of 2:30?
