I just go by her crying. If she's really amped up and there are absolutely no lulls (even if super brief) or pauses in her crying, I'll go in. But if it goes up and down in intensity then she's better off to just work it out. We were going in every 5-15 minutes depending on her cries. We figured out that at 20 minutes she usually soothed herself. We decided DH would sit in the glider / not look at her until she fell asleep.
